Default cranial rectal inversion

This old fart needs confirmation of what I probably know is the answer. I dropped a washer in the oil pan while replacing heads. Definitely dumb, but should I pull oil pan to find washer or try and take my chances on letting it go. Hoping the washer doesn't create lot's of hate and discontent to my engine. Any comments even lewd and crude welcome.

how big of a washer? You probably have good odds in your favor that it won't get tossed into the rotating assembly during operation since we have a windage tray on our LS1s. Depends on if you want to take the chance or not. It definitely won't get pulled into the oil pickup, that has a screen on it.

The good thing about LS1s is that the oilpan gaskets are reusable, and if you can lift the engine off of the mounts a few inches you might be able to drop the pan down enough to fish around inside with a pen magnet for the washer.

If I were to do this on my 69 SBC, I'd have to say screw it since that leaky oil pan is impossible to drop down and then get to seal again.

well the good thing about the old sbc is that felpro has a one piece only pan gskt for them, gawd I wish I knew they were around a long time ago. But yes I do believe it's a pain in the a$$ to get the front seal to not leak. Or just dumb luck.

I had to drop the pan on a Gen II SBC, and it's leaked oil ever since!

0) make sure the washers are able to be picked up by a magnet
1) Remove your oil level sensor from the passeners side of the oil pan
2) grab a speaker magnet and slide it around the bottom of the aluminum pan until you hear the washer clanking along from the magnetic force...drag it to over by the hole for the oil level sensor.
3) Make a magnet fishing pole, and drop the magnet into the hole and jiggle it around some to make it down into the bottom of the pan. Pray, and you should have landed on the washer.

I got an oil pump pickup bolt out this past weekend using the same technique.

Very slick.

And you're definitely a programmer with that zero-based list.

hot damn!!!! that is very creative, I thought of a magnet but that is very cool...how big is the hole for the oil level sensor though??? The ARP washer is at least an inch in size. But very ingenious I have to say

The man speaks the truth! Witnessed it with my own 2 eyes. The only casualty was a small refrigerator magnetic ornament.

Very good! It probably helps to have an aluminum oil pan and of course the oil sensor hole. Not sure if that would work on a SBC.
