John...

You guys with those super-duper heavy duty springs can get by with that much installed height. Oh well... I guess those great big cams need alot of installed height to keep out of spring binding.

Us po' folks with the run of the mill 918s need that stock install height. In fact, mine are put in at 1.77" Gets me 135 Lb seat pressure though. :p

Of course with my little 220/.553" cam, I don't have to worry much about spring bind.

Ron, can only go to 1.80 installed height with stock length valves right.

Don't most springs lose some pressure in the beginning?

John ...
Well, you can pretty much increase spring installed height as much as you want (up to a point) by machining the head surface that the spring base sets on. In the case of the LS1, I guess thats the head surface where the valve seal/spring base assy set on. Of course, the greater the installed height, the less seat pressure, however, it increases the ability to run higher lift cams before getting into spring bind.

Get too much installed height, and you won't have any seat press.

That's about what I know about it in laymens terms.....

Hey, I'm a pilot by trade, and and sometimes a 'weekend wrench monkey' by hobby! ..... But, I have been doing it more more than a while...

At 1.80 installed height my springs would have been at 165. We needed 145.

I'm not sure what you mean Ron, you mean cut the head down a bit? I'm not sure if that can be done? My understanding is that the machining along for wider diameter springs will break into the intake ports and it's a regular occurrence for shops to use silicone to seal things up...

you can only get more installed height by increasing valve length or sinking the valve job (hurts flow the less depth on the valve job the better.). If you cut on the pocket too much (where the spring sits). You will cut into the intake port (comes into play pretty fast when you are using larger than stock diameter springs.)

Who's running the most amount of spring pressure with a hydraulic cam?

What are your numbers George, 165 ??

My first solid roller had a 2.0" installed height. We have switched to an entirely different valve and spring setup since then though. My new LS6 heads for the solid roller will be setup around a low 1.8x installed height.

And I thought you were squeezing all the power you possibly could out of that motor. When you said the words "My new LS6 heads" my mind went blank for a second. Keep us updated, im not the only one who follows the process of your car

lol, thanks man. The motor is going to be much different when I put it back together. As I mentioned above, I'm putting GTP ported LS6 heads back on with Titanium valves and a new 24x/24x cam. I am also putting in a set of custom Diamond pistons for more compression. The entire valvetrain is getting redone and most likely I'll be switching to a 1.8 T&D rocker. Diamond billet main caps with ARP main studs will be added as well since it has to go back to the machine shop anyways to have the rotating assembly rebalanced. The combustion chambers, valve faces, pistons, and exhaust ports will coated at Polydyne. Hopefully, I'll have a sheetmetal intake manifold to use by then also if someone hurries up testing his. Allan, you listening??? :p

I'm real excited to get this done. The heads are done at GTP and are at Polydyne now. Chris @ Diamond is working on the pistons this week when I get the order faxed to him.

Hmmm 155... I'm thinking about going 155 with my stuff since it will go down to like 145 once they break in...
