Default wondering about my cam......

alright i have read the stickies and have done tons of research on the cam i now have in my car. But i am still confused. The cam is 230/230 .591/.591 110LSA + 4

Now i have been told by several people and from what i understand this cam should have great power down low. But to be honest my car is a total TURD down low! I hate trying to race from a dig or at the track. You can actually hear the car "lug" for about a second when i launch at the track.

Could this be due to the stock 3.42 gears in the car? If i would get 3.90s or 4.10s would it really wake the car up to the level it is supposed to be at? Or am i totally wrong on guessing the range of power for my cam.

FYI: the car still has stock 241 heads on it. And its about to hit 100,000 miles. I have only dynoed the car once and afterwards i found out i was getting really bad valve float and a random "misfire" due to the springs being worn out. That dyno was 388hp/377tq. I replaced the springs with patriot gold duals and the car has really woken up. But like i said it is still dead until about 3500rpm-4,000rpm. Now once it hits that 3500rpm or so it pulls HARD all the way to the redline (6900rpm).

Just looking for a little help on something that has been bothering the **** out of me! Thanks

Brent

I bet the car would really wake up with a set of 4.10s. That cam should feel great down low. My 230/224 feels amazing on the low-end with my 4.10s.

Yeap, gears and clutch

Gears will help you reach the powerband quicker, and clutch if you're still running stock to grab that power and put it where it belongs.

That is a good cam BTW

I have a centerforce 12" dual friction clutch that i put in about 10,000 miles ago and it is grabbing nicely still. I guess i will go ahead and get the gears and see what it does.

And could you explain to me why its such a good cam? Is it b/c of the 110LSA +4? i have heard several people talk about it but i dont understand.

These are the .050 Valve events of the cam, while it doesn't tell the whole story, it give a picture of what to expect.

IVO>11
IVC>39
EVO>51
EVC>-1
116 ECL
10* overlap

From this you can deduct that the cam will peak at about 6000 rpm or so (fairly early IVC 39), very exhaust biased so plenty scavenging for trq in midrange, but with 51 EVO it will lack a bit below, 10* overlap will make some good power.
The graph should be a bit peaky, falling off quickly after peak. I think 6900 is a bit too far for that cam, with gears you might want to shift sooner like in 6500 territory.

damn.....thanks predator-z! I really appreciate the help. So do you still thank this is a decent cam for a cam only car? Also.....right now i am running true duals dumped at the axle. I am thinking about going to a catback now b/c the duals are pissing off too many neighbors. Would the catback be choking the cam? Or would it really not make a difference? Thanks a lot for all the help!

How about some unported Patriot 243 heads milled enough to make 8.7 DCR with thin head gaskets. Should be good for 30hp.

how much milling would be required to reach that. I haven't figured out how to figure the DCR and SCR etc. etc. I gotta make sure i have ok ptv clearance. Keep the comments and opinions coming guys! I appreciate all the help.

63cc and a 045 gasket.
Rule of thumb is .007per cc

Then it might not fit any more.
Per cc size of mill varies with castings but is usualy either .005 or .006/cc

yah i would rather keep the car cam only for now. Although i'm sure my lifters are on their way out with 100,000 miles. So if everything else is still good i might replace the lifters and put a set of heads on while i'm at it. I dont need anything crazy seeing as how i am still in college and can't afford a lot. My car is also my daily driver so i need it daily driver friendly.

What type of heads would work well with this cam if i do go that route?

If going low $ and no porting then use the 243/LS6 heads. Patriot had them for approx $400 a pair bare.
