Default How much can an LS1 handle

How much is the bottom end worth, i was thinking like 500 to the wheels? I have 79k and was thinking of heads cam or a turbo either way should i worry about the motor because i was going to leave it stock?

my buddy runs a turbo on his stock motor, 515hp 560ft tq

i ran 150 shot on my cammed car...around 500 to the wheels

alot of people run in the 550 range but it is kind of a ticking time bomb

With a sturdy 6-bolt main, the LS1 is actually quite stout for a small block. Its been rated by the factory to support close to 600 horsepower. GM said that during thier testing, they suffered little to no bottom end damage when designing the motor and dyno testing. Running those numbers with power adders is running on borrowed time IMO. Lower the compression and run nitrous with alot of boltons and a good cam to have the car reliable, but able to clean up at the track.

Hope this helps

theres no accurate answer to this.... at any time with a modded engine the motor can go. of course you have a better chance of the motor staying together with less mods done to the car but there is no real answer to this.. if your planning on going with high horsepower numbers than i would take the safe route and build it so you will be able to handle big numbers without a problem.

the stock bottom end is strong, the rod bolts are the weak link

well im just not sure what to do. I want to make her a pretty fast street car. I didnt know if i should support the power first or if i could afford to. All of the posts gave me a pretty good idea of what im looking at. Im not a nitrous fan and my stall isnt set up for it. Im not really sure i even want that ne more though. Thanks guys the input is appreciated.

I've heard after 550, things start to break.

high rpm's and extreme cylinder pressure are the problems.

How much can the stock crank take? I've randomly thought about getting a mild rebuild done on my engine including forged pistons/rods.

I have a friend who is a member here also that has a 99 ls1 with a sts kit that made 525 to the wheels. he had a little over 150,XXX miles on it when it blew. but daily drove the car making that power for about 15,000 miles and he didn't baby it at all. I think with 79k you should be fine

the stock crank can handle cloe if not over 1000 HP. thwor some new rods and pistons in ther and a girdle and you are set.

I know guys running 470+ and haveing no problems, a lot of it comes down to the tune and how safe you want to make it.
