You can do a 395 with a 4.125" stroke with some machine work to the block. Just ensure the pistons are designed with the longer stroke in mind with the proper rods. The pistons will need a different ring combo to help with piston rock at TDC and excess side-loading due to the rod/stroke ratio.

Nowadays, 402s and 416s can be had for only a few hundred dollars more than a 395 kit + machining costs. Plus, if you buy the shortblock outright, you then have a complete LS1 shortblock to sell on ebay for a few hundred bucks. At the end, the difference will probably be less than $500. And a 402 will definitely outpower a 395 due to the larger bore, which unshrouds the valves and allows for more flow/power.

And the pistion in the back next to the reluctor wheel needs X-tra clearancing because of the long stroke

with the potential problems that a 395 would have, you'd be WAY better off going with the mentioned 402, but if budget is gonna make the ultimate decision, go with a 383, that will be your cheapest option providing you are gonna reuse your existing block.

No matter what you do, you increase CI, you will increase power rest assured of that.

Your thinking of going larger by increasing bore and using a 4" stroke, when in fact, your only adding more stroke. The 383 uses a 4" and a 395 uses the 4.125". In either case, the bore stays the same. Cubes come from the stroke. Like Jake said, you gotta be careful with the piston design on the 4.125". There's lots of room for potential problems if not done correctly.

all the blocks have a larger bore then the stock ls1/ls6 block. so going to any other block, will get you more CI via the bore.

Duh. 6 liters is 364ci. Do the math. Same for the LQ4 and LQ9. But they will accept the bigger bore and if you put a 4" crank in with a bigger bore, you get a 402.
