Default How do you guys feel about this cam?

It is a 230/238 592/605 112lsa (or 111 lsa if I want). It is from Raging Motorsports. Mark from Raging just put it is a full bolt-on 98 vette with headers and it made 403 rwhp. I am looking for something big... this is just about good enough for me.

Let me know what you guys think?

I want to order something within the month!!

Thanks fellas!

That cam looks like it would really do well with a set of stage 2 heads. That cam would probably do well with a set of 3:73 or 4:10 gears as low end torque would be in the dumper.

The duration looks pretty big and would have a pretty lumpy idle...I'd expect to have something that acted like a race car with that cam, bad street manners and all. As you may be pulling some low vacuum at idle.

It would probably be great at the strip though, not really a good street cam.

That cam looks just like the one sitting on my garage workbench. 111 lsa This cam is just like the LGM G5x2 cam just alittle less duration on the exhaust side. Should produce similar results.

I'd say go for it. Everyone is so afraid of doing a big cam in a 346, but the LS1 seems to handle them like a champ with good tuning via LS1 Edit and a raised idle. As long as you get some gears like atleast 4.11's out back, it won't be too bad. I'm sure it will sound mean as hell too and pull like a SOB in the upper RPM's.

Hey another '01 Arctic White SS with M6, howdy brother! That cam sounds like too much for me, I'd put in a TR224 112 if if I were you. I already had one over-camed car, that was enough to last me a lifetime! It was a 270/270 in a '67 Firebird.

How good of a street cam will this be... or not one at all?

It will not see much track action... but will probably see more when I finish the car (all the mods I have planned).

Will it be too much work to drive around?

Let me know how you guys feel.

It is not a daily driver.. but I will definitely drive it a lot after the cam. Maybe I will make more time to have fun with it also.

It have the stock rearend.. and was thinking about 3.73's.. will this be enough gear, and will I have problems with breaking the rearend (don't plan on high RPM launches with sticky tires either)?

Thanks!!

Not a street cam at all IMHO. You will want 4.30 or 4.56 gears and you will be changing springs once a year.

Hmmm. If it were going in a mostly street car, and you still want the lump of a big cam, I'd do a big reverse split of some sort.....like a 236° / 228° but with only about .558" / .540" lift (unless you are going with big heads) and a 110° LSA on a 106° IC. That would preserve some mid range torque also. And it should idle HARD .
With that cam you specified; you would have to have custom pistons, or fly-cut the stock ones.
Yeah, gears would be a must also.

I agree. If you want a big street cam a TR224 would be a good choice. The monster you have listed above is more racecar-ish.

Yeah.. I don't find many of them around!! Which is a good thing. What options do you have.. and what rims?

I do not really want a single pattern cam, and if I did get one it would be a 228/228 or a 230/230.

How will this 230/238 cam be on the street, as well as on the highway? Will it have any driveability at all?

I am not worried about big.. but I don't think that I want it to be like John Force's Castrol car!!

What do you guys think of this cam: 228/236 .571.602 111LSA. Is this a "big" cam?

Would it be a whole lot different then the cam that I was talking about getting... 230/238 .592/.605 112 lsa??

How will this cam compare to maybe a X1, or TR230 in terms of power and driveability. Will it make its power a lot further into the RPM range.. or would it be similar.

Compared to a big single pattern like the TSP 228R, or a 230/230 cam... how does it match up with power and its street characteristics?

Thanks a lot for the info so far guys... it is helping a lot!

Yeah I like that fact that there are fewer of them around, plus white gets a lot less attention from the cops. As far as options I have leather, CD changer, and ASR. ASR is nice since I drive snow-packed roads around here, but it's off during the summer! I have real GM Z06 wheels, 9.5x17 front and 10.5x18 rear with 275/40 and 295/35 Pilot Sport tires. The 9" rear with 4.11 gears and Koni shocks are my favorite mods so far. 8 point roll bar is waiting for install then I think I'll be getting a cam. Driveability with those big cams is no problem on the highway, but you might be hating life around town, and changing springs once a year is a hassel. If you just want some rump-rump, I'd go with a Hotcam or something with a lot of duration but without the spring-busting high lift. But the good thing is LS1s are easy to change cams on so you can switch to something else if you have to.

I am definitely going to get either this cam or something similar... or maybe the X1 which was my initial plan.

sounds kinda like the cam im getting for my car. 228/236 590/601 111lsa except this is going in an auto (th350/4400 stall) im gonna run 3.73's and see what this does. car has holley aluminum intake, and will have mild ported heads. depending on how fast it goes depends on if i try to spray it or not...
btw i'd put the comp R lifters in, you might be able to get away with the stock ones if you dont have a lot of miles on your car, also get a good double spring *comp 987's and rev 1116's are good, the rev's dont need machining on the seat to make them fit either*

keep us posted how these cams work, hopefully mine will be back together sometime soon

I don't think high lift (above 580 something) is responsible for the numbers people are seeing out of heads and cam cars and just cam cars but valve timing events themselef are the reasons for larger numbers. My cam is only 224 at 50 but with an icl of 106 and lsa of 110lsa it made 405/406 rwhp/rwtq corrected and 415/417 uncorrected. Have comp grind the cam with the duration you specified with lift in the 580ish range and a narrower lsa (like 110 or below) and an icl of 106 or so and see what happens.

Thanks for the reply KMStevens and DailyAluminumBlock... It I did a cam like this, should I go with a 111 lsa instead of the 112?

Would this cam be streetable at all after that?

Hey KMStevens... are you looking for any good street mannerisms with your cam at all?

How much more power do you guys think it will make over a X1 or TR230?

Thanks a lot guys!!

it should still be "streetable" but obviously its not going to let you put around town at 1000rpm or be very smooth. my thoughts on streetability is probably a lot different than yours might be, if the car can move itself on the street without stalling all the time then its fine with me. if its gonna be anywhere close to a daily driver, then i'd go with something like the X1 or 224 cam.

Thanks for the additional info.

How do you like your cam. It is very similar to what I am looking at. It is not a daily driver... and when it is driven... it is 99.9% of the time because I want to.. not because I need to.

I talked with a guy who has this same cam in a bolt-on 98 vette. His car made 403 rwhp on stock heads. He said that it lacks a little low end with the 3.42's.. it should!!

He likes it a lot. He said that he puts about 5000 miles on the car each year, and is by no means your average weekend warrior. He doesn't really plan to run the car much, but does want to see what it will do. He said that at 900 rpm at idle it is fine.

If I have a M6... do you think that 3.73's would be enough, or should I go with 4.10's... if I get this cam!!

How does your car drive...does it have any "manners" at all. Or is it like driving a drag car around. Do you think that it will be a lot choppier and weaker in the low end compared to the X1.. or will it be within reason.. the same?

Get 4.10s or even 4.30s. Even the stock setup is much better with 4.30s.
