02 'Hawk, I'm using stock cats, SLP Y pipe, and SLP Loud-Mouth Catback. Sounds good now but I bet it sounds better after I get that TR224 in there!

Cal,
I mean after headers That's the same stuff I've got right now too, btw. I'm going to go back to my OEM D/D after the cam/headers though. LM will be too much (maybe, but if not it can stay)

[quoteYou should get a solid 30hp out of the 224, then another solid 20hp after computer tuning. Could be more, could be less, but that's about what I would guess . . .

Thanks Cal... momma will happy to hear that!

OK wasn't sure exactly what you were getting at . . . it probably would be loud as hell with no cats through a LM. I have to keep my cats to pass emissions here, so if I put headers on they will be shorties or mid length. LT's with cats take away too much ground clearance unless the car has never been lowered. Another option would be a setup with LT's and off-road pipes that are switchable with the cats. I think there is a company that makes something like that, or you could fab it yourself; I might go this route also. I have a MIG and a Sawsall, and muffler shops will make up custom tubes with bends and flairs pretty cheap; then you go home and install it so they can't give you any static!

thanks Cal, im just not too sure that the 224 will pass emissions over here in CA
OK I don't have the thread it came from, but FWIW in my notes from this board I have: "To get the TR224 114 cam through CA emissions, the idle had to be increased from stock 750 to 900rpm."

From another thread: "the 222/230 114 passed the CA sniffer no problem."

Bumping up the idle is pretty basic; there are many other things you can do as well.

Cal, I'm going cats too, have to...emissions. I'll have some LT's, Y, and cats fabbed in, then my OEM D/D if the LM is TOO loud, even w/cats

FWIW I have the 224 112 and it is very nice even with stock gearing. No emissions here so I cannot comment on that but I believe it would be very hard to do on the 112

My guy says on a 114 w/FLP and cats, it's no problem. He's hooking me up with a set of lightly used FLP's for 900, installed. Not too bad, eh

Guess I have to order the cam from TR GP now...

Better hurry, the group purchase deal ends on the 12th. I saved $100 on my TR224 package with Ti retainers on this GP.

Yeah I think you'll pass OK with tuning. I dug up an old post last night where a guy with a TR224 on 112 passed in CA, so on a 114 shouldn't be too bad.

should be easy then, I'll just make sure the fans have been off for awhile when I do have to test. I've got a year, I think.

talk to me about your cut 1LE springs. give me some details. I'm about to buy Pro Kit, #400 linear fronts for LS1.

Well instead of shelling out the cash for the Pro Kit, you could buy a set of 1LE springs and cut them. It was about $150 for the set from the local GM parts counter. Or you could just cut the springs you have in your car now and get very good results. I used the 1LE's because I wanted the higher spring rate, but cutting them also raises it another 10%. I don't know why so many people have this phobiea of cutting springs; works well on 4th gens to get up to a 2 inch drop. I cut one full coil off the fronts and about 1.25 coils off the rear plus removed the rubber donuts from the rear. That dropped the front 1 5/8 and the rear 2 inches. Still have a slight rake and looks like it shoulda from the factory.

Just missed the GP due to ordering the 220/220/114 cam package three weeks ago. But the good news is I finally made up my mind which can I want, I'm sending the 220/220/114 back for the 224/224/112! when emissions time rolls around I'll swap out cam's.

TR has a dyno of that cam on their site i think. I don't want to cut my 1LE springs though...Eibach for LS1 are #400 linear in front, still progressive and a little softer in back.

I wouldn't just assume I had to swap back for emissions; I really think you could get the TR224 through even on a 112, it will just be close. There was a guy that posted a couple months ago that he had done so in CA. Just set your fans for a high temp (stock), set your idle as high as allowed (1200rpm in most areas) and maybe pull some timing out. Another trick is to hot-wire the A.I.R. pump so it runs all the time; normally the PCM kills it about the time the engine is warmed up. Do a search on this; there was a guy that passed a 230; you could PM him for some more tips.

They run well with stock heads, but of course do better with ported heads. Remember, even stock heads are about as good as ported heads used to be on the old SBC.

Thunder doesn't have a dyno graph for the TR220 on their site, but they have one for the TR224. Someone from Thunder said the TR220 yields 5-10hp less than the TR224, so just shift the high end of the graph down that much. At the low end the two lines would probably intersect at 2000 to 2500 rpm.

you should be fine with good tuning and cats. make sure the car is hot, water temps around 220, get your idle speed to at least 900. After my install and road trip im going to hit the rollers just to see where mine stands.
