Default Help!!! Trouble With MOTOR!

So i raced this Cobra last night a dead stop lined up from a 0-110 did a pratice run. Then i lined up to race him. We went for it until about 3rd gear my car started acting up i didnt hit the rev limiter and i was shifting at about 6800rpms. well when i went to 4th and let off. my car just died.... and started makin a horrible knock/tick noise.

So i poped the hood. and noticed there was smoke coming out of my Throttle body (becuase i have a clear lid) and i took off my lid and noticed it was oil burnin. and there was oil sittin in the t/b. So i get the car towed to my house. Pull the valve covers, pull the plugs. etc. and nothing. everything was as should be. of course my plugs were a lil oilly. but.. Can someone please help me diagnos my problem before i pull the heads. I surely hope its not my bottom end. i was not leaking any oil or anything.....

now when i got home and tried to start it to pull in the drive way. the starter was just grinding and it wouldnt start...... real werid b/c i tried to start my car after i raced and it ran/started.. just knocked bad. DID I break my STARTER TO>??!?!
I did my cam swap about 2 months ago and did the dual springs. seats. retainers etc. etc.


Any input or advice would be great...Thanks

did you check your oil before you raced?

you overreved it and had probably been doing that for some time. I am sure there are some exceptions (they are aways are) But an ls1 with a stock bottom and is not gonna live long at 6800rpm Just cause it makes power up there does not mean its safe.

Sorry to say it but you probrally threw a rod or at least spun a bearing.

did the motor lock up and is this what caused the car from turnin over?

possibly, what do you mean by the starter grinds? If you had the flashers on or something that drains the battery the starter will make kind of a ratcheting noise and not turn the motor because there is not enough power to crank the motor over completely.

the battery is not dead. its more of a grinding sound like the starter hitting the flywheel

then it probrally either broke the starter or the ring gear on the flywheel from the motor being locked. Time to pull the motor, pulling the top end of the thing while its in the car is a waste of time.

I would guess that a piston ringland broke along with the rings and that you will be looking for a new engine in the near future. I hope it's not too bad, but the symptoms you described don't sound too good. Good luck !

i will inspect the oil tonight and oil filter.

People spin stock bottom ends to 6800 all the time. I did it on my stock block til 80 and then sold it with absolutely no problems. Long as you have the correct springs and aren't getting valve float, tell me what's wrong with setting your rev limiter to 6800 if it still makes power there?

the rod bolts in 98-00 cars weren't as strong as the 01-02's (some late 00's got the upgrade too). They are hit or miss over about 6400-6500 whether or not they will stetch or break. spinning a stock 98-00 bottom end to 6800 is risky buisness. usually results in just a spun bearing but worse has hapened.

If your plugs are oily, that means there's oil in your combustion chambers. There's only one way really that much oil can get in there. Sounds to me like your rings are gone and you weren't checking the oil. One thing lead to another...few good 6800 pulls, motor sucked up all the oil and you either threw a rod or spun a bunch of barings.

If it's not even starting, something major happened... time to pull it out and have it checked out.

really.... I never heard this before. I have a couple friends with 98 - 99 cammed cars spinning to 6800 with no problems at all ... weird.

I would attempt to turn the motor over with the crank damper bolt. Pull the plugs and with the car out of gear, see if it rotates easily. Takes a 24 mm socket. After you drain the oil, dissect the oil filter and look for metal. If you are lucky, you just floated the lifters, and the oil in the TB is from worn ring blow by.

it can be done, don't get me wrong. It's not a sure thing that the second a 99 spins over 6500 they spin a bearing or throw a rod. I spin to 6500 and don't think about it with a 99. BUT the tensile strength of the bolts IS less, and on this site, spun bearings have been attributed to bolt stretch (which is logical) but I do think that it also has to do with the oil level and the oil pump. I check my oil every week to make sure it is topped off and run a good oil, not the M1 5w30.

I agree also, with a stock bottom end IMO you can rev it 6400 at the very most, I stay with 6200, you are just eventually gonna get bit! It sounds like you are already there!!

Definitly makes sense, not arguing that. Either way i'm sure his oil is gonna look like glitter when he drains it.

I also check my oil very often. I kinda have to with the loose ring gap for the nitrous. That coupled with being a stroker eats oil like nothin... Can easily go through 1/4 quart in a night if i'm driving it hard. Run amsoil too, i'd never run anything but a PAO oil in my car.

I would try and turn the crank bolt. If it is VERY hard to turn or wont turn at all don't mess with anything else its time to pull the motor Good luck bro

here is waht i found when i pulled the oil drain plug.

theni pulled the passenger head and everything looked fine?
