Building Bottom End
Building Bottom End Alright, I have a 98 Ws6 with 90k miles. Mods are: LT headers, Cut out, SLP intake, Moser rearend with 3.73, and Fast 90/90
I want to refresh my bottom end so i want yalls opinions!
The options are to start over with a LS6 crate engine or rebuild and stroke the LS1. Which bottom end would be a better platform to start with?
I want to keep a budget of about $6000.The finished product with good cam and heads i want to get to 500whp.
If i chose the LS6. How easy is the install? Can i use stock wiring harness or ecu? Will LS1 cams and heads fit on the LS6? How about my Fast 90/90?
If i chose to rebuild and stroke. What stroke kit should i get? What should i stroke it to? How strong will the motor be?
Any help would greatly be appreciated!

The ls1 and ls6 are pretty much the same damn bottom end. I still dont get why people think theres some special difference in the LS6 
Anyway if I were you i would pull the motor, disassemble it, take it to a machine shop thet bores using a torque plate and have them hot tank the block then bore/hone the cylinders,line hone the main caps to match your new crank and have them check the new crank. Then if you are capable of doing so assemble the motor yourself.
Any forged stroker bottom end will make great power and will be very strong provided you assemble it properly.

Are you planning on building it, or having it built? If you are going to do it yourself I would find out if there are any improvements on the later model LS1 blocks (I thought the 98's had a few negative differences) but other than that you would be better off with an LS1 block over an LS6 block in my opinion. In all honesty though I would just go with an L92 block and build that (4.065 bore 6.2l alum block, $1400.00 new). Or just get the complete 416 short block and go from there.

Well i feel comfortable building it but as far as the timing and all the machine work i dont!
So far i decided to just get a local speed shop "thunder racing" to rebuild and stroke it.
Unless you can convince me to get a L92 block and build it!
If i do this where can i find a L92 block?
Will it fit with stock motor mounts and wireing harness?
What modifications would i have to make?
Keep in mind i want to stay at about 6grand for the bottom end!

Here you go. SDPC has just about the best prices you can get on GM stuff and also have a full service machine shop and have been building motors for many years. I built motors for 10 years or so myself between 1985-1995 and these guys were building them when I got started. If I were to buy a built motor, it would be through them. The L92 does require the conversion parts that are used with the LS2, but they may even include those.

Well my goal is to reach 500rwhp, so i think a 383 will do the job! Just cause i have 6k doesnt mean i want to spend it all. I can just use the money i saved on a different part of the car.
The cylinder sleeve is thinner on a 98 and can't be cleaned up more than .005 I believe which is not much. I'm sure he will go back with better rod bolts anyway so no worry there. I would do the L92 if it fits your budget. The matching heads are awesome and very affordable.
