I just goggled the #'s on the block and it came up as a 97 and up block. Should I use this one or get a newer one?

I was told it does not have the bay to bay breathing that the LS6 block has but is stronger due to not having these holes in the bottom end.

an ls6 block would be awesome, but hard to find just laying around. i would use a block '99 or newer block myself, or by a new block from SDPC.

Just to shed some light on the cam issue, I'm running a 239/248 110+2 in my 383.

lilbuddy, does your 383 like that big split?

JR, make sure you go with a cam at least in the 240's. I have a 237/241 cam with high lift on the intake side and it did not perform well for my 383. I'm going to a cam with more duration but less lift. It has a big split also.

Here's a few selections I have in mind. Please give some advice on any of these.

TPS Texas giant 248/254 .611/.613 113lsa

Speed Inc SS1 238/244 .605/.612 112lsa

Vengeance VRX7 244/248 .612/.596 112,113,114lsa

Vindicator 240/244 .608/.596 ?lsa

These are just a couple I have found to be appealing to me. I want it to be street-able but more on the wild side.

What is the down side of using a 97 block vs a newer one?
A ls6 block at sdpc is 1300 bucks ouch.

Just posted this in the other 383 thread. I also tuned another 383 belonging to one of the guys that posted in this thread, if that even matters.

383, AFR205s, Fast 90, pretty mild cam. Something like a 239/243 .615 on a 113+3.
Its all in the heads, cam choice, and of course the tune.
This was also with a road race safe 12.6:1 or so, and 26 degrees of timing up top.

i believe on the '97-98 blocks the oil thru the front/rear covers wasn't that great and can oiling issues. bay to bay breathing on the ls6 blocks worked awesome, and was good for like 20+hp, all lsx blocks have this as well, but both come with a hefty price. jr i guess the best advise to give you is, either find a '99+ used block in good condition(it's already been seasoned, if you know what i mean) or buy a new ls1 block. the power and rpms that you will be making and turning, i think the likely hood of u breaking the block is very low. i did a 383 F/I motor for a local guy, using a 2000 5.3 block and it produces around 803hp at the crank w/9lbs. of boost and we don't have any issues. good parts, and perfect assembly will pay off big in the end.

Well, A guy told me about a place called SMC that has 2 ls6 blocks new. They want 600+shipping for each of them. I hope they are not blems.. I'm going to call them tomorrow.

Or on the other hand I could get a 6.0 lq9 block and build a 402/408 and just get new pistons to fit it. My buddies are trying to talk me into doing this from the start. Maybe I should have listened to them.
Tony just posted results of a 403ci with 205's and mild cam that made big power and TQ. Maybe I should shift gears and just go that rout.

What do you guys think?

Well actually my buddies convinced me to just build a iron 402/408. That way I can really beat on it. Like a 250+ HP shot. I could build it for the same money. Why not other than the weight factor.

So, this short block I have is up for sale... If you know someone thats interested, shoot them my way.

And I think I found another LS1 powered toy(drag car) So I may be de modding the car. Just to put it in street trim. Maybe.
