Default Retarding the Stock Cam

Think this will increase power at all. This is with the 2000 fbody cam which supposedly has a little more lift and duration than the 2001 cam. I think retarding the cam might be good for about 10hp along with 200 rpms higher shift points.

What do you guys think?

I almost forgot to mention that stiffer springs would be required for the increased rpms.

For those who are interested here are the specs of the 2 cams.

98-00s had a 202/210 Dur @ .050, .496/.496 lift , 116 LSA or pretty close to those specs.

01-02s had a 198/197 Dur @ .050, .478/.478 lift, 115 LSA.

Not worth doing.Get a better aftermarket cam grinded to your specs. It doesnt have to be radical but if your gonna do the work then reward yourself.

I already got a mms 229 cam waiting to be installed but Id like to see if I can get the car into 11's with the stock cam.

Its a 2000 camaro with a 2001 intake. It looks like the 2001 fbodies are faster than the earlier ones even if they have the new intake. Youd think the older cars with the new intake would be faster since their cam has more lift and duration.

I realize retarding the cam is a lot of work for little if any gains. Im still curious though.

You might peak a little more hp on the dyno but if you have an automatic transmission you will hurt your 60' as you will raise your peak torque. You will need a converter so you can leave about 500 rpm below peak torque to take advantage of the increased hp.

If you have a manual then you will need to launch at a higher rpm.

Really the gains are not worth the effort. If you are willing to go to that much work you might as well install another cam.

I went through the same situation with my cam. I went with more cam but it peaked higher so I slowed my 60' and had almost no et improvement. I did increase my mph slightly. I have since retarded my cam and will see what results I get now.

You want to get the most torque average through out the rpm band or your et can suffer even if you are peaking more hp!

ome of your specs are a little confused the 98-00 cams were 190ish duration the 01-02 cams have 200+ duration but the lower lift.

Jay

Your saying that the newer cams have more duration and less lift? That is interesting. Some say the older ones have more duration.

I have no idea. Im just going off whats at raughammers site. One way make sure would be to measure both cams with the cam dr.

You guys have talked me out wasting my time with the stock cam. I will just install the mms 229 114 cam. Im not expecting much with the 3.42 gears but from a roll it should be a monster. <img border="0" alt="[burn out]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_burnout.gif" />

Jay-
sorry bro, but your wrong. THe '01+ cam has the 190* duration and the 98-00 cam has the 2x0 duration cam. When GM put the LS6 manifold on the 01+ they had to change the cam (smaller) hence only a 5hp difference between the 98-00 305hp rating and the 01+ 310hp rating.
