Of course it was a salvage block. There's absolutely no reason to waste money on a new one when you can find a fire block that you know has worked just fine already.
Add in a used Eagle stroker crank from a sponsor on the site, Diamond pistons, CompStar rods, Hellfire rings, Clevite H bearings, machine work, ARP fasteners, GM gaskets all the way around (still have to measure piston deck height and order Cometic head gaskets). So for the price of a cheap 408 with cheap parts if I bought one pre-assembled, I get one with the best parts that are still affordable.

Just be careful if buying from a sponsor. Make sure they send you the specs. I recently saw a 402 from a certain very popular company and the piston to wall clearance was close to .015"!!! It was basically one big machine designed to fill the intake with oil.
