Default Ring gap direction?

When installing rings on a piston, what direction should the ring gaps face?

Top ring?
2nd ring?
1st oil rail?
2nd oil rail?

Just wondered. It might not matter, but I'm building an engine for the first time and want to leave no stone unturned. They say it's the details that make all the difference.

Here is how I do them:

With the piston installed in the bore place the top ring gap up toward the lifters

Then install the 2nd gap 180° from the top ring

Then install the oil expander the same as the top ring gap, then the top and bottom oil rings 135° offset from each side

I gotcha on the top and bottom gaps.

On my Hellfire rings, it says to put the expander ring so that it butts above the end of the pin. Sound okay?
Thanks for the help.

I really don't think it matter much. Everyone has their own way of doing things. Both should work fine

Just make sure the top and middle rings are 180* out
