Yes, you need new bolts and gaskets.

^^ Yep. Just get some new GM head bolts or ARP head bolts & new head gaskets.

I'd replace them with LS7 lifters since they are very affordable & a upgrade over stock. Just remember to soak them first. And if your gonna change you timing set, you'll at least need a new crank pulley bolt too. You might also check your water pump gaskets, crank seal(in timing cover) & timing cover gasket.

Wink

They are right about all that. I just finished pulling my motor apart for a broken piston.

You need:
  • head gaskets (optional cometic for better compression but expensive)
  • head bolts (ARP are much better and if you ever plan on swapping heads do it now or use studs)
  • front cover seal
  • front cover gasket
  • waterpump gaskets 2 of them
  • crank puller
  • new crank bolt
  • RTV for oil pan
  • anti-freeze and distilled water for radiator
  • fresh oil
  • exhaust manifold gaskets
  • extra tranny fluid if it is an auto

You are going to have to drop the oil pan a little to get the timing chain out there is a 10mm bolt that holds the oil pick up on and you can not get to it without dropping the pan a little. I loosened all the bolts in the pan and the used a screwdriver to make some room. That is all I can think of off the top of my head. Good luck.

P.S.
Might as well throw in a new cam since you are in that far.

I'm having to pull my heads to replace my collapsed lifter too. I wanted to just go back with stock heads but realized it was a b!tch to pull the heads. My best suggestion is to put on a new set of heads instead of the stock ones. If you need some graphite head gaskets or some GM head bolts (I went with ARP) send me a PM. Good luck.

How did you get the oil pump pickup bolt off with the pan bolted up? I thought that was difficult with the pan dropped.

There is no way to get the lifters out of a stock LS1 block without removing the heads. Thats a fact.

What he said. I just pulled my oil pump and I could not get a wrench in there without dropping the pan 1/2 inch. I tried for an hour before I broke down and did it.
