Car won't start, What are some good spots to start troubleshooting?

When I go to crank it...my buddy says the starter sounds like it's boiling.

By the way....I just did a motor swap....

It's fairly new though, ugh...you sure I need to replace it...I don't wanna replace it if I don't need to haha. It's only like a year old.

I don't know I was just kiddin ya. Do you smell anything after trying to start it? Was it running when you cut it off or did it die? If you just went out to start it one day and nothing I would think it either has to be the starter or the solenoid. I would take it off and take it to have it tested.

Well, I just built a new motor....and I went to crank it, with no fluids...just to see if I had connections. I hit the key, hear a crank and stopped. I fill her up, and go to do it again, with a basically dead battery...and she was spinning over, reallllly slowly. I then notice a little smoke from a ground on the strut tower. I figured it was just water from the rain, so I clean it off, connect it and no more smoke. Went to do it again, and it was doing the clunking sound, bbabababaarely turning, and smelled like burnt wire.

You can burn the brushes on a starter by trying to crank the engine with a dead battery. Check all the connections and verrify voltage at the starter. Could be a loose wire.
