Default What to do about valve seals?

when i do the cam swap on my 98 i would like to replace the valve seals. i was looking in to the prc dual kit that comes with them, but a comp 918 with ti retainer will be better for my .595 lift cam right? i know i reuse teh stock seat with the 918 but i dont know if the seal and seat are one pice or two. should i get a oem seat/seal? or some other brand

The seat and the seal are 2 different things. I would just pick up the PRC dual spring kit, it comes with everything you need: springs, seats, retainers, locks, and seals. Plus the dual springs will last a very long time with those springs, I have them with a similiar lift cam and they work like a charm.

well thats why i wanted the duals, because every one and their mom says their good.
but are they overkill? would the 918 give me better valve control.

i thought some ls1 had the seat and seal as one pice and some had it as 2

when it comes to valvetrain overkill is always good. I have PRC's and love them and won't run anything else. As for the seat and seal being one piece I think it is only 01-02 cars that have that, my 01 had them together. Hope this helps.

There is no such thing as overkill when it comes to valve springs.

Earlier cars had separate seals and seats, in 02 (or thereabouts) they switched to the one piece seal/seat. Just order the earlier seals if you decide to go that route.

well would 01+ seat/seal work also? i guess in a way it would be better.

so i will get better valve control (valve float) at 6600 rpms with duals over a 918 with ti retainer

If you are using a beehive type of spring, you should be able to use the later seal/seat design. Comp also makes shims in 0.015", 0.030" and 0.060" that will drop right onto the seal/seat to shim the springs to your required installed height. I think anything that lightens the spring/retainer mass will help with RPM. However, if I were choosing a beehive spring I would look at the PAC 1518, you will get better service life due to the surface treatment of that spring. Another good spring is the PSI 1511ML, also treated for longer spring life.

You can see the shims under the checking springs on my Darts, which uses the one piece seal/seat design. The spring on the edge of the photo is the PSI 1511 with a titanium retainer.

So your saying the pac 1518 will out perform the new 918's
It seams like the duals will be cheaper and i guess safer due to two springs in one. They also come with every thing from seat to locks.
the cam i is on comps xer lobes .595 lift
the lighter spring mas of the 918's or 518's with ti retainers will be lighter then the duals so it should stop valve float, but then again my revlimiter should be at 6600 and me shifting at 6500 (if i speced out the cam right)
i would like the cheaper route. help...

I think you can go either way, if you have a question on the Patriots shoot an e-mail to Gunnar and get his input on your specific cam. I just wanted to make sure you understood the beehive setup and how the seals/shims worked. Once you talk to Gunnar, pick the option that best suits your budget.

i didnt think you needed to shim the duals or the 918s or 518's

so back to the 1st queston, i should reuse my stock seat and just replace the seals if i go with the silgle spring, witch im on the fence about again

If you're on a budget the PAC-1218s will work well with your lift and xer lobe.

PAC-1518s are nitrided so that's why they cost so much more. It's worth it though. They will easily last the life of your motor where as a 1218 should be checked every 30k or so.
