I got my 400rwhp with a "baby cam".. it isn't that hard to do in a 6 speed car.

Thanks for all the input guys!

Chris, howse she goin' b'ye...you heading down this way this summer? I've decided I'll be swapping out the stock heads, but I don't see going as high as 11.3 CR on our shitty 91 octane gas down here. Money is always an issue of course *L*, but I'm leaning towards giving these new Patriot heads a try at US$1500 with no core charge - and the exchange rate is going more our favour every day so even a Stage II setup will come in well under 3 grand Canadian. Will definitely be doing the LS6 intake too BTW .

niphilli, yes for sure the definition of "streetable" can be a wide ranging one *L* - even myself I find the Hotcam and SPEC III ceramic clutch to be completely streetable, while I'm sure some wouldn't. So a cam that behaves no worse than the Hotcam (love that lope BTW *L*), while still passing emissions is "good".

So right now I'm leaning toward a cam along lines of the Comp cams 224/224 .581 .581 114LSA - people who have this cam seem to have no trouble passing emissions and still see good gains. I will be using dual springs too - want to do this right the first time *L*. So this cam (or similar), coupled with a Stage II head would give good power while still being fairly tame and emissions friendly? Would a 5.3 head be a better match with it's consequent slight higher CR?Comments?

Tony, you posted while I was writing this I guess *L* - thanks for firming up my mind on a 224 cam.

Things are good man

I am hoping to get back this summer, work has been really busy so I dont know how long I can get off for vacation though.

BTW the 230/230 112LSA cam will idle better than your current hotcam and make a lot more power.

It's a good idea like you mentioned to get dual springs. With 160 stat, NFLD's cool weather and fan programming you could easily run 11:1 no problem at all.

I would look at 5.3L ported heads and the LS6 intake is a must IMO so I would factor that cost into the equation.

I think the 224 cams are way too small and give up power unnecessarily. I wouldnt go below 230/230 on 112 personally

Also with dual springs I'd seriously look at the XE-R lobe. I gained over 20RWHP going to the XE-R lobe single pattern I have now over my previous XE lobed 226/234 112 cam.

good luck man, you'll have to take me for a spin when I get home!

Cheers,
Chris

ps- Are cruise nights still happening? NFLD has a GREAT car scene and nice open roads for fun too!!

My mods...listed below gave me 427 at the rear wheel with an A4. Just get some GOOD ported LS1 heads (LS6 are good for 15 or so more hp, but cost much more), and your off to a good start. TEA, CARTEK, JPR....something like that. Patriots are cheap... but a very big unknown at this point.

Chris, cruise nights down here now are like a sorry remake of The Fast and The Furious - only we call 'em The Slow and The Curious *L*. Really it's gotten way too crazy and a lot of guys are now just doing their own thing, in smaller groups just to keep away from all the kids out there. That's what we mostly do now with our own little F-body club. Still undecided on the cam (but I have a little time yet), but still leaning towards a Compcam 224 with XE-R lobes and Stage II 5.3 heads. It's all coming a little clearer anyway...I think *L*

JamMasterJ, I'd love to have a set of LS6 heads but $$$ ain't saying so right now...ah well.

Yeah, I stuck with LS1 heads myself...couldn't justify it. Not with the heavy core.

Oh yoy are one of those hardecore guys huh

Its a shame you have to pass emissions, if not you could easily see 450RWHP. But I agree with all said above cam around 224 on 114 with some good stage 2 heads.

Hardly hardcore *L* and emissions regulations are still to be brought in - but they're coming and I plan on holding on to this car (and driving it daily ) for a good long time. So I want all this work to fit the bill now, and not worry about it later . Hey I may even learn to be satisfied with a car that runs 11's at ~ 120mph *L*

bill, my combo makes 384 at the wheels and passes emissions. still stock heads. add any ported heads and you'll be over 400 easy. that is with 12 bolt with 4.10 gears and full exhaust (no cutout or duals). see sig for best ET and mph. or my website. the B1 cam is mild enough for daily driving, yet produces very nice power at all RPM's.

2MCHPWR, sounds like you have a very similar combo to what I'm seeing to end up with - very similar. It's nice to see you've gotten good results like those with a relatively mild cam and through a 12 bolt with 4.10s, again same as I have planned. The B1 is undoubtly a cam that has gotten good results for some time now, but from the research I've done, I believe I can still go just a bit further on the cam and still end up where I want to be. Like with the CC 224/224 .581 .581 114LSA. On stock heads there probably wouldn't be a big difference between the two, but on a set of stage II heads I think this CC cam would do a little better.

Mine's a daily driver, made 410rwhp/415rwtq with a 222/224 cam, through LS1 intake and mid-lengths with CarSound cats. Weiand intake should be on the car in a couple of weeks, hoping for 425rwhp or thereabouts.

The 224/224//114 cams will not lope more than your current hotcam, I think maybe a little less.

But the cam you are looking at will work better than the hotcam.

I agree with Tony, I think a 222/222//114 or 224/224//114 works well on the street, idles well, and will have better low and mid range power than a 230/230//112 cam.

About the biggest I would go and still look to pass emissions would be a 226//226/114 or a 224/228//114. These two cams are a bit bigger and have not necessarily outperformed the very strong 224 cams.

I8Cobra's car was very classy, idled very smoothly, almost no lope, and made great power. I look forward to his new dyno numbers.

Old cam 222/222 .560 114+2
New cam 224/224 .563 114+4

Picked up the car today, 60 miles so far on the new bottom end. Gotta break it in first before any dyno runs. I'd be happy hitting 420hp again.

More support for a 224/224 cam - I'm more and more sure about that part of the "plan", thanks again guys.

While on that topic though, how much is there to be gained though in going with a 224/224 .581/.581 114LSA over a 224/224 .56x/x56x 114LSA?

I'm thinking maybe 2-4hp, definitly not worth the little extra stress on your springs.

Even with a good set of dual springs?
