Default Phantom tap noise...

here's the symptoms, quite at idle, taps when revving in neutral or going thru the gears, pretty much anything over 1500 rpms, but when it gets in overdrive and the converter locks with a load on it dead silent, starts tapping very faint when theres no load on it. i was sure it was flexplate related but replaced it with a tci one and its still there, another mechanic looked at it and said it was the timing chain, which i found hard to believe cause its a rollmaster double, so i pulled the front cover and it didn't look to loose. haven't bought anything else yet and still have it apart. any other ideas to look at?

It doesn't sound like a Phantom to me. It sounds real. I Phantom is something you think is there, but there is no evidence. You actually have the evidence because you can hear it. What about the drive shaft? Can you at least isolate the area the tapping is coming from? Engine, trans., rearend?
