Default Dyno'd 388 today > Would locking converter get me 10 more?

Went to the Birmingham F-Body club's dyno event at Walker Dyno today. Walker has a new Dynojet facility that just provides dyno services. Got 3 pulls and the use of the wide-band for $35.... Good price.

I guess 388 rwhp ain't bad through a full exhaust with cats and an unlocked converter.

My question: Had I had the converter locked, might that have givin me the extra 12 rwhp to get the infamous big "Four Zero Zero" rwhp?

My wide band air fuel ratio was 12.4 above 6,000 rpm. I was told that if I could get it tuned to around 13.2 I might get another 10 rwhp out of it. I guess I need to get the PCM back to Thunder.

All in all, the little TR220 cam seems to pull pretty good through the Stage 1.5 TEA 5.3L heads.

Nice numbers. At least your pretty close now. I'll need to be on the juice to get to 400rwhp.

Do you have a ported tb? I've heard that's worth about 5rwhp or so on a h/c car.

Thanks Gary....

No, got the stock unscreened MAF and stock TB.

You know, there are cars making bigger numbers, thats for sure, but this mild TR220 cam really makes for a nice daily driver with fast throttle response (at the expense of the big numbers on top, of course)

Anyway, the 98s dyno pretty low when stock. In fact, this car with its A4 dyno'd right at 285 rwhp when I bought it new, so this combo gave me an honest 100 rwhp with really about the same street manners as it had when new back in 97.

Sure would like to see that 400 number though. I may try locking the converter next time. Just have to figure out how it's done.

Ron,

Gary, did you ever get a wide band on your car when it was dyno'd? You know, your car may just need the right air / fuel ratio. Just a thought.

Locking the converter will give you a higher hp reading and low torque reading.

You really need to see how the power is through out the rpm range. I've seen some engines peak good hp but don't et as well as some with less hp. That's where advancing or retarding the cam can help.

That's some good power by the way, running through the cats and no cutout with only a 220 cam!

I would guess 8-10rwhp with that converter (last few ST3500 yanks were ~10rwhp so you will probably be a little less), getting the a/f to 13:1 at higher RPM will get you a few more also - dont think 10 but that depends on a lot of things.

To lock the converter you can use efilive pro, a techII or just a good old wire with a switch to ground the PCM wire..

Hey Ron, I'm glad you got to dyno the car. Our little TR220 cams can make some good numbers. I improved to 403rwhp and 384rwtq down there today. We tried locking the converter on my brother's car and it actually lost a little hp.. I don't know why. He's got a 3200 vig and a FLP level 4 trans.

Couldnt find a yank converter dyno file here but here is a locked/unlocked comparison dyno, done right after the other, from my old C5 with a vig3000. Its pretty obvious when its locked and not locked. Also notice how the unlocked rpm is way off, the limiter was set to 6400, its a dynojet thing.. There was a 14rwhp difference but vigs usually lose a bit more then yanks from what I have seen.

I'm pretty sure my af was correct, but I'll double check since it didn't print out on my dyno.

Thanks for the idea.
