Default 404 Stroker No Good??????

I just recently purchased a stroker motor from one of the sponsors on this board (I will not reveal the name until I have something confirmed). Forged bottom end....everything top of the line....completely assembled from them. I paid nearly 8k for this motor. All I did was transfer over a few things (timing cover, intake manifold, accessories etc.).....I towed it to my tuner and had him put in a tune and do an oil change with rotela oil (as the sponsor recommended) . Started up the car let it run for a bit and the noise appeared....he took off the belt and the noise was still there...at this point i've really had it. 8k spent and not a mile on the motor, and here i am hoping i won't have to pull out the motor just to send it back and wait another month plus.

When you said completely assembled, is this with oil pan? If not did you clearance the pan to the 4.00 stroke?

It came as a long block....pre assembled minus the timing covers, oil pan.

i hope this isn't what it is but alot of times you have to shim the windage tray. did you check that to see if it was hitting ?

Yeap, so that would be the first thing I check, windage tray clearance.

Thats what it sounds like...I put 2 washers on all my ARP main studs, so the crank would clear the windage tray.

That is exactly what I mentioned to him when he called. I'm not concerned about it being mentioned that it is our motor. We have 100% confidence in EVERY engine that leaves our facility. I'm not sure if he installed the covers and oil pan or if the shop did the work. He wasn't very clear on who did it. But it sounded like there was a good possibility that a windage tray clearance issue was the problem.

Just drop the pan and add about an 1/8" shim in between the windage tray and the mains, that will solve your "grinding" noise. Typical with a 4.00" stroke.

And i have confidence in you guys also....hence the reason why i spent the amount that I did. And the same reason why i've ordered from you guys in the past and the same reason why I didn't point any fingers at you guys as I stated on the phone....Aside from that, that's not my issue....I'm concerned with trying to find out why this motor is howling like a wolf at just idle. If it is the windage tray not clearing, what would that cost as far as labor wise? Could it have damaged anything?

I know you weren't pointing fingers. I was just getting it out there before the whole world starts asking the question and feel your PM box trying to help you out. Typically it won't hurt anything when it isn't run for long. Usually, from what I have seen, it wears on the rod bolts and dents the windage tray. You will need to look into it immediately and make sure you change the oil as well.

The car has less than 1 hour of run time....it was quiet at first then it started making that howling noise out of no where.....the car was immediately cut off.

I have always heard good things about there customer service. Don`t worry they will take care of you for sure! But it does sound like the pan hitting!

I always experience outstanding service...this thread was not made in any way to bash TSP. If there was a problem where i found there service to lack quality....I can take it up with John...And believe me, myself being a well paying customer I have every right to if there are any problems. I left TSP's name out of this for a reason, and lets keep it on topic.

prob a simple search would have told you to check that!! am i right???

just because you can afford to buy a high hp engine dosn't mean just anyone should own one. i would say this prove's it. not to be a ***** but when you start makeing big hp you should have at least the basic know how of how the engine works.or pay someone who will know what to check before the first fire of a 8k engine.damn

good luck

I would think a quick way to tell if it is the windage tray and not a clearance issure somewhere else is to turn the motor over by hand with a ratchet. The rods are going to hit the tray at certain points, not constantly. If it is a constant scraping I would imagine you clearance issues somewhere else. I would try taking off the timing cover next, just to make sure that nothing is hitting in that area as well. Is your oil pressure good?

It could be a really simple thing, it is a new motor. Start narrowing down where the sound is coming from and work from there.

The oil pressure is amazing...Its at the shop, they're going to take off the cover, because thats where the noise seems to be coming from. We were all assuming that it was the chain, but it can't be....because i ordered a SINGLE rollmaster for the same reason.

If it is in that area, could be cam retaining plate, timing chain hitting cover, cam bearing that walked (that is known to happen with aftermarket bearings).
I hope it is nothing serious.

Your really contributing to this thread, the guy is asking for help and you put him down very nice my friend. Im sure you were a master mechanic when you popped out of the womb right... Everybody has to start somewhere the guys motor when dead and instead of rebuilding the stock **** he upgraded is there anything wrong with that??? jeez....

It couldn't be the cam bearings. He already said the oil pressure was good. I wouldn't expect a single roller to hit the front cover either. If it were the cam retainer plate, again you would have oil pressure issues when the cam tried to walk out of the motor. I have seen that happen when a customer didn't properly torque down the cam retainer plate bolts.
