Question are new lifters a must with a new cam? which lifters?

my engine has 80,000 miles and runs like a top. I am swapping heads and putting the TR 230/236 cam in.

99-TR230/236-112 Thunder Racing Custom Camshaft
"Split Pattern" - 230/236 .592/.602 112 LSA

$$$$$$$ is tight and i prefer not to buy any new ones unless it is a must. why should i or shouldn't i buy new lifters.

which lifters should i buy if i HAVE to buy some? any good deals on them?
thanks
chris

its not required, but if any of them fail youll have to pull the head to change them. if i had 80k i would at the least get some stockers.

If you weren't doin heads also I'd say don't bother, but for the extra $100 you'd pay for the LS7 lifters it would be worth it to go ahead & do them now so your entire top end is fresh.

And the LS7 lifters are now the only stock replacement offered by GM unless you upgrade even further to the Caddy lifters, so if you just want to go back with stockers you'll automatically get the upgraded LS7 pieces.

just picked up a set of the LS7 lifters (pn 12499225) yesterday...$109.60...dealership wholesale
of course, my current stockers have 210k miles, so I didn't want to re-use those in my new build...

If money is tight, then I wouldn't worry about them... what I would do is plan on changing them when your able to put a set of heads on while your in there

He is already replacing the heads according to his first post, unless he was thinking you had to remove the heads to do the cam swap???

If you are swapping heads & doin a cam why cheap out on $100 for new lifters when they could save you later?? It's smarter to just wait a couple extra weeks or whatever till you have the money to do it right the first time.

DOH! You are correct... lol my bad

and I agree with what Big Mike is saying... it's too much work to do and not upgrade an integral part like a lifter. Wait till you can afford it, then upgrade to the Caddy Lifters

I've got ~70K right now on my stock lifters and i went ahead and picked up a set of LS7's from SDPC for like $99 for my upcoming H/C swap... hard deal to beat. Do it for peace of mind if anything.

Thats one of the best reasons to do it. With as many miles as hes got i would say its a must. His stockers have been through 80K miles of hell, he'll be better off.

When I built my 370 I used the comp "R" lifters. I paid alot more for the caddy lifters but for what your doing I would upgrade the lifters to the ls7's or caddy lifters.
