Default What is a normal oil consumption for LS1?

I have a 98 Trans Am with 85'000 miles on it.
The engine has stock (and original) internals.
I usually drive it home to office: 2x 15 miles on country roads.
I use a 0W40 synthetic oil.
I have a catck can after the PCV: it traps some oil but never so much as what I have to add.

In winter it needs 1/4 every 1500 miles: is that still OK for how I use this car or is it too much?

Thanks

Stefano

I would say 1qt or less every oil change is acceptable.

According to GM if the car typically sees operation above 3000rpm then 1qt per 1000 miles is ok.

I have found that depending on how hard I drive the car (high RPMS do consume oil, which is ok IMO) that I will use bewtween 1-2 qts every 5k Miles using the GC 0W40 oil.

The more I drive above 3K RPM the more oil I tend to use, as well as fuel...

I changed my oil every 4K with Mobil1 5W30 and it needed about 1 full Quart at 3500 Miles. I changed to GC 0W30 So we'll see if that does anything

Interesting!

During my short trips the engine reach a normal operating temperature only after 2/3 of the driving time.
I usually shift at 2000 - 3000 rpm and every day the engine goes up to 4000 rpm a couple of time.

Is that the cause of my oil consumption?

If that blower uses pressurized oil I wonder how much
finds its way down the intake.

I am one of the lucky ones. I have never added a drop to mine. Stock 98 68k. I hope that doesn't change with the compression bump when my H/C goes on in January.

In winter the blower is disconnected... it's a SQ and has helical cut gears: it's not good to use it below 25F (see the Vortech instructions).
So right now it's a simple NA and is consuming all that oil

Maybe it's because of my short trips... is there something i can check?

Thanks. After reading all the replies, I was beginning to wonder why my 113,000 mile car doesn't use a drop. Mine only "used" oil before I added a real catch can and threw the Homemade Home Depot separator in the trash can.

Using a quart in 1000 miles is definitely not OK...One between oil changes, I could see, but not 3 quarts having to be added between changes...that can't be OK.

Could you PLS post a pic of your catch can?

Is it possible that I'm usig so much oil because of the short trips I usually do?

Here's my catch can setup...bought from LS1tech vendor Norris Motorsports. $89 shipped if I recall...nice setup and good guy to deal with.

http://www.mikenorrismotorsports.com/

I purposely used clear tubing, instead of the black that came with kit...that way I can see if any oil is making it to intake or not.

I didn't start burning oil until I added a large converter. I have to add about a quart every 1500 miles or so. I believe a lot of my oil is getting sucked into the intake so I supplemented my catchcan with two oil separators. I don't drive it enough know to know if this has eliminated the problem but I now have confidence that as much of the oil is getting caught before getting pulled into the intake.

In my case yes: I never measured the oil quantity trapped in the catch can, but it's not just a couple of drops...
In summer it's just oil, in winter it's a mix water-oil. it's about 50 - 100 ml every time I fill the fuel tank.
I don't think the quart I loose every 1500 miles is 100% trapped in the catch can. I guess about 20% of it.
