Default Mild Cam for '04 GTO LS1 w/Z06 heads

Hello, I have a '04 LS1 from a GTO for my S10 truck. I've installed Z06 heads on the engine and am shopping for a cam. I'm looking for a mild cam, something better than the stock Z06 cam that can still be smogged with a good tune since I live in CA. So far I've been looking at the Trick Flow Track Max stage 1 (216/220 @ .050, .560/.560) and the Comp Cams 269 Xtreme (216/220 @ .050, .525/.532) Which one would be better for street and occasional strip use? I know you guys like big cams around here but it has to be smoggable. Thanks in advance for any help.

They say the Thunder Racing TR224 114lsa is the biggest cam (with a good tune) that will pass CA smog. I'm not sure though so I would research it if I was you. Maybe ask in the local CA rooms for guys that have done it.

i didnt think you could pass smog with a car\truck with a larger motor than stock. might want to check into that..but i say the 228r imo..

TSP228R would be good, or the TSP224R.

There's a few basic requirements: engine has to be newer year than the car/truck, emissions/fuel system for that engine must be used, have to have invoice with VIN #, and the new engine can't pollute more than the old engine. I've heard and read the REFs who do the certifying are more concerned that they pass the sniffer test. I doubt an '04 LS1 w/22k will pollute more than a '95 4cyl with +165k.
Thanks for the help guys. Didn't mention it before but I'm looking for a wide power band.

thanks for the help. I'm in the process of installing a set of yella terra 1.7 rockers. Will I be able to re-use the stock rocker bolts or would I have to buy a new set? the engine has 22k.

the stock ones are fine. Just torque them to 22 ft/lbs, spin the motor over a few times and then retorque them to 22 ft/lbs and your done.

I'd slap an X1 or a TR230/224 in.

I passed NY and VA emmissions with the Tr224 cam on a 114

I have the TSP 228R now, but I liked the TR224 better

If you want a mild cam, that gives great power and still idles like stock, look at MTI's Stealth II cam. I have it and it's great for being a daily driver. Idles perfect. Only if you really really listen can you tell there's a cam. But, above 2500 rpm, it pulls HARD to 6500. It's a nice comprise cam. My signature has the numbers. This is still with factory exhaust manifolds. Headers are next on the list!

Shouldn't it be more than that with LS6 intake, LS6 heads, and the TR224? I would guess it should be closer to 420rwhp.

With ported heads yes but stockers, no.

What about all of those stock longblock C5 Z06s pulling 390-400rwhp? They surely would gain another 20rwhp with a simple TR224 cam without touching the heads. Cobra4B here is pulling ~435rwhp with only a G5X2 I believe.
