Default Timing Chain and oil pump on 02'?

I'm about to order the TR224 on a 114 and can't decide on if I need to order the timing chain and oil pump. The 02's have the LS6 pump already and the car only has 13K on it. Does this stuff still need to be replaced? Thanks in advance!

I have never heard of the 02s having the LS-6 oil pump. I put in the Thunder racing ported LS-6 pump, and a rollmaster double roller timing chain. The're pretty inexpensive for the extra strength you get.

jmx,
That is kinda what I was thinking. Thanks.

jaywoo,
Paul @ Thunder Racing mentioned it the other day the the 01 and 02 cars had the same part # as the LS6 pump.

I would at least get rid of the stock timing chain. You will be suprised at how much slack it will have when you take it apart. Go with the Rollermaster Double ($90) or Cloyes HexAdjust ($145). Your oil pump should be fine.

I went with the JWIS timing chain and kept the stock sprockets. Even though the '01 and '02s have the LS6 pump, they are not ported and do not have the presure relief valve mod, so I still ordered a replacement from Thunder. When I asked about this a while back, there were a few people that said pumps had failed in '01s.

Cal,
With the JWIS chain and keeping the stock sprockets you don't have to drop the pan correct? Thanks

I was asking the same question. Does anyone know if we have to remove the oil pump, which does require dropping the front of the oil pan to just install the chain on the stock sprockets.

I changed the oil pump and timing chain sprokets without dropping the pan. Loosen the pickup screw a few turns, then wrap it with safety wire and hold it with safety wire pliars while you finish removing the screw. then pull the pump and sproket. Reinstall the opposite way.

I would say yes you will have to remove the pump because it mounts over the crank sprocket, and yes that does require dropping the oil pan a ways. The only way around it would be to split the chain, but I've never heard of anyone doing that. It's possible you could use a motorcycle chain tool to press one pin out, thread the chain through, then press it back in, but I'll let you be the first to try that one!

Their web site says that this cam goes to 6600 rpm. If peak hp is 6600 this means you will need to shift about 6800 or so to optimumise this cam. If you can't shift this high then get an adjustable timing chain so you can advance the cam. I have the Rollmaster double roller on mine and it works great.

You don't say what gearing you have but if you have the stock 3.42 gear and factory clutch you are going to have a tough time launching this cam installed straight up. I doubt it makes good low end torque without advancing.

I don't think you're going to have to rev that high. the 112 falls/levels off at about 6400 and to hit your peak TQ area when you do shift, you'll not need to shift so high.

You can get the rollmaster double roller from SDPC (sponsor) for like $68. And yes the oil pump HAS to be removed. But like Jaywoo said you can remove it w/out dropping the oil pan. Just loosen the bolt then put safety wire aound the bolt to hold it as you remove it. His wife is the one who did it so i hope you can to.

Also they say the cam is good for 6600. Yes it can rev to 6600 and still make decent power. But not that it peaks at 6600. You will want to shift more like 6500.

How much more bottom end will the 112 have over the 114. I'm on stock gearing, but really like the 114 due to idle quality. Thanks for the great responses guys!

If your talking about the TR224 cam I believe it comes with 4 degrees advanced into it. Correct me if I am wrong guys?

Also jaywoo thanks for the tips, I'll keep this post in mind when the time comes to intall my cam as well. BTW-Whose legs are those underneath the car

02' Hawk- I also have 15K miles on my stock chain, but I think for safe insurance I am changing mine.
