Exactly what causes this crap...
I've taken apart alot of engines in my life but only seen two that looked this bad inside. One motor was a turbo TA motor out of an 80 trans am that had Quakerstate motor oil in it. It had less than 100,000 miles, never figured out why it was so gunked up inside. This engine I bought real cheap and was told it "ran but was tired" so I decided to take a look inside and found a lot of questions. This engine only was supposed to have 70,000 miles on it and thats why I decided to look inside to see why a 70,000 mile LQ4 was "tired". It had a bearing (front main) that looked like it was oil starved but didnt spin.
What caused this black crap and how do I get it off all the covers? The solvent in my parts washer wont touch it.
Maybe lack of oil changes???
Thanks for you ideas, Tom

Thats what I was thinking^^^^^^^^^Musta been a fleet motor.
I've been trying to convince my mom to change her oil more often but my uncle keeps telling her its ok to go 15,000 miles with Mobil1 extended life oil. I'll go 5,000 with regular Mobil1 in my 2002 Silverado 6.0L but no further no matter what. Uncle says "if you want to waste your money changing your oil too often go right ahead" I said "If you want to waste your money buying a new motor...
How do I get this **** off these covers? The thicker stuff scrapes off ok if its a flat spot on the cover but this stuff is nasty...
