Default Head gasket

I am doing H/C and wanted to know what head gasket you guys recommend?

It's a stock 346 LS1. I will be doing either PRC 5.3 2.5's or AFR 205's and an MS4.

I see alot of people using Cometic .040's. Are these good and where would I purchase them? Or would just the stock GM gaskets work well?

Thanks!

I went patriot stage 2's and was told to go 4100ths gasket to bump up the compression in theory now other then that the GM gasket is a verry good gasket and can be reused I have a set of GM ls6/ls1 head gaskets right here if you want them they will work on your car thier still in the package they were just a little thicker then what gunner advised. PM me if you want them I just havent sent them back to thunder yet.

I am running the .040 cometics and I went with this thickness specifically to get my compression and quench where I wanted it. It's best (imo) to go with a thickness that is the best match for your combo.

I prefer the GM MLS gasket they are cheap to replace if you ever need to at around 20 dollars a gasket. The Cometic gaskets are nice, but they cost 80 a piece.

So, does the head gasket really matter. I mean, I just usually use stock GM gaskets on everything....

Well it depends on the power you are making and the cylinder pressures. The MLS gaskets tend to hold up a lot better to intense pressure versus a graphite gasket. Then you have the whole gasket thickness to help you get the CR you desire.

What size are the GM's?

And I plan on making in the neighborhood of 450rwhp N/A and around 550+ on the spray... what would you recommend

The stock MLS are .053 and will hold up to the power levels you describe. As Sigforty stated, they are a good gasket for the money and are readily available.

Just an FYI, the MS4 will not clear with the PRC Stage 2.5 5.3L heads without flycutting the pistons. You would have plenty of clearance with the MS3 however. Or the stage 1 heads would clear as well.

We've got numerous options for you that will not only have PtoV clearance, but will make gobs of usable power too! Give us a call or shoot me a PM if I can help!

*EDIT* We also offer the GM graphite and MLS gaskets as well as a full line of Cometic MLS head gaskets. We'll help you select a gasket with the correct thickness to optimize the quench on the motor which helps ward off detonation issues.

Matt@Texas-Speed,

Do the 5.3 heads require the graphite gaskets, instead of the MLS?
