Default Using intake off blown motor...

Has anyone here ever re-used the ls1/ls6 intake after blowing your motor or one that came off a blown motor car? Pieces of metal definitely went through it but I was wondering if it is possible to clean them out or not. Just looking for some advice guys I have dibs on an extremely cheap ls6 intake because the owner wouldn't feel right selling it after blowing the motor with it on....

Thanks in advance,

Josh

I wonder where I could take something like this to have it looked over? Possibly a machine shop maybe?

I bought my LS6 intake off of here. It had to come off of a blown motor b/c it was full of metal pieces. I cleaned it out really good and it is fine.

It's a risk? How is it a risk if you dunk the thing, clean it out and then run some more liquid through it and AGAIN thoroughly clean it out? Anything big enough to cause ANY harm will be visible...

i bought a one from a blown motor, i flushed water through it and shook it to hell and back, ran a magnet through it, it was like new. just look in all the ports with a light and see if the metal damaged the plastic.

Its just IMO dude you dont have to take it personaly. For one if I was going to get a diffrent intake for a ls1 I wouldent bother with the ls6 yeah its alot better but thier are some that are better yet unless the ls6 had been fixed up by tpis.
I like new junk on my car not somthing off of a blown motor hell the thing could have some stress fractures in it now that you cant see, I mean their are alot of reasons to not get it IMO not to mention if a small peice of junk gets missed while cleening it.
So you do what you want Yes I think its a risk but I like my car and plan on keeping it for a long time you do what you want.

Unless you plan on doing FI off said LS6 intake, as long as the plastic isn't visibly cracked, it's doubtful there would be any harm in reusing one off a blown motor.

Any pieces large enough to cause issue would be visible from any of the 8 intake ports. It's not like the LS6 or LS1 intake has some secret passages for metal to hide. Just have to run a strong magnet through it. A cheap $2 natural rare metal magnet like neodymium would rip any embedded pieces out. Heck one I got for 50 cents is rated for 35lbs of force.

He might be fine but I just dont get it, couldent you guy just buy a new one what are you realy saving? was it given to you for free? I mean you can buy one for 400 bucks or less its like only 10 to 15 more HP anyway and to put somthing on my car from a blown up car NO WAY man.
It could be totaly fine it probly is, but even that 1% chance that it might not seal right or what ever is not worth it to me personaly. So if it works and everything is fine you can say haha that guy was a homo it works just fine or if somthing goes wrong you can say dam I wish I had bought a new one thats how I see it.

it's not like he's trying to reuse the factory head bolts or anything(have to be real deprate to make that move). to some people every penny counts. if he inspects/cleans it correctly he doesn't have to worry about damaged motor

Clean it well and run it. The LS6 intake is a good intake and if you can get one cheap even better.

With the problems you think may happen, you make it sound like the motor deformed and went through some catastrophic thing. LSx intakes are plastic. They usually crack if there is a problem, even when an engine chews a piston up or lose a few bearings or whatever, it just kinda disintegrates within, but to cause an issue where the intake wouldn't seal correctly on a good engine would take one hell of a "blow up". Probably along the lines of a front end accident more likely.

A simple inspection would reveal any problems, it's not like you can hide anything anyways once you see in in hand.

Another thing is he's getting it cheap. All the more reason. It's not like they make LS6 intakes new anymore and on top of that they usually start at $500.

The FAST and others are even more expensive and only show a significant benefit when your goal is 450+HP.

Well guys I went ahead and bought it. We inspected it thoroughly with a flashlight and although there is plenty of small piston particles it looks like it will be relatively easy to clean. He even said that if I got it on and there were any problems he would give me my money back. He was skeptical even selling it but I made it clear that I wanted to give it a try.

By the way I picked it up for $50. I just had to and it appears that it will pay off. He's a good guy and I'm glad we worked out the deal.

Good post sir!

OP, I see that you said the gentleman would take care of you in the event of something coming up with the intake? That's awesome! You picked it up for $50? thats a SCREAMING deal! You just saved yourself $350-400

Cleen that sucker out good man take your time dont use brake cleen on it because brake cleen eats plastic soap and water or a soft parts cleener is all that is needed, Your gong to want to get new seals too thunder racing has them I'm shure you all ready planed on it.
Becareful of your oil pressuer sending unit behind the intake .
also be careful not to over torque your intake bolts they brake easy.

Good luck man I'm shure you will be fine but just wanted to give you a diffrent perspective on it.
YOu can also send your ls6 intake off to tpis later for 300 bucks to make it a 90 but then you have to get a new TB which is 500. I'd almost send it off to them right away if it were me because the will cleen the crap out of it. just a thought.
Hey maby just give tpis a call see what they say.

I just made a called and they said it would be fine to use one off a blown moter they said the main thing was to get it cleen because oil gets in the intake and build up so thats a place where the chunks of junk can get stuck and then later get in your motor.
So take some time and make shure you get it cleen they said even to use pressure to wash it out and run somthing threw the runners.

So yes if he cleens it good he will be fine but I will still buy new stuff myself the caust of a new one to me is = to 6 times at the gas station so its not that much IMO.

I just got off the phone with my local machine shop. They have a real nice parts washer that will shoot about 50psi of water all through the intake. They said for $10 they can get the job done so I'm gonna swing it by there at noon. I'll take before after photos for you guys.
