Ok you're all gonna laugh. It was the valves seating making the noise because i had blue tape over the intake and it was making a popping sound when the air was displaced. With the tape off its much quieter and seems normal to me. For what its worth i am blonde

Clear as not hitting pistons while rotating by hand, probably; clear with a safe margin, probably not.

Otherwise i dont see a point in spending $150 on bolt and head gaskets for a $200 engine that could possibly run on these heads long enough for me to listen to the shortblock and watch it make oil preassure.
My time to re-do everything while it's in the car, or pull the engine would be worth the bolts & gaskets to be able to do it while it's in your living room..

Gotta remember that what clears now will be closer when running and the lifters pump up.

Just be careful. And like you said, if the motor grenades, oh well, you're out $200.

Eh it took me less than two hours to remove the old pontiac 400 by myself i figure i can have this engine in and out in about an hour since it will be all new hardware, no PS, it's a manual (no cooler and no TC) and no freakin pontiac motor mounts. Plus it weighs half as much.

If it goes it goes. If i take the heads off I'm going to flycut because i will not jut take heads off to check PTVC. I wouldnt just flycut for stock heads either, I'll buy the heads i plan on using on a 4xx bottom ends and stick them on. I dont believe in fixing things until they are broke. Right now, I am broke as far as extra money for the project. Once the engine is in there and all bolted in i can adress minor details line bent valves or spun rod bearings. I've had to do alot of sheet metal and chasis work to the car so i just want to get it all back together and go from there.

I kind of want to see the valves get bent. It'll encourage me to buy some heads. Maybe i'll actually charge something lol.

How do i know what lobes i have? I keep seeing all of these different kinds and i have my cam card and all i just dont know what lobes they are.

Man thats plenty of room. I could land a harrier in there I remember running all the number on this cam before i got it and i came up with it being like .068 or something. i remember it being like just under the safe ammount. I've had the cam for a while, i bought it off of the board here.

when looking at ptv if im even thinking right, what VE do you look at ivo or ivc and at .006 or .050 or .200 to judge what would have the most ptv
^^^
his 230/230 111+4 xfi/xfi
.006 .050 .200
IVO 33 8 -30 BTDC (-indicates ATDC)
IVC 67 42 4 ABDC

mine 232/234 110+3 xer/xer
.006 .050 .200
IVO 33.5 9 -30.5 BTDC (-indicates ATDC)
IVC 67.5 43 3.5 ATDC

i have 2* more durration but less lift so my intake opens 1* sooner and closes 1* later.
or at what VE is the valve closest to the piston i would think its .050 but atdc or btdc
