Please vote for the one you think will be the easiest to remove an LS1 Engine and do some work on it...

Well......

For every 10,000 guys who removed it from the bottom...1 has done it though the top..

so I think odds are that bottom is easiest.

To go through the top IIRC you need to remove the heads, etc. So stick to the easy way

Always seen the shops remove form the bottom, but, they have a lift to do it from. In your garage, if you have a hoist and engine rack, prob no other way than remove it from the top ... would be a good time to cut away the metal lip at the bottom of the windshield to make it easier from up top, for sure.

i have removed 4 from the bottom, not too bad at all, (i own a shop with 2 lifts) This time on mine i am going to go top. Last time i had the intake and headers off it looked to be just as easy. the only down side is you have to do more assembling after you get it in. It is still way easier than taking a 4.3l out of a 4wheel drive s-10 blazer. Those suck bad.

No doubt the bottom is the easiest, but it hasn't been available to me since I just have a hoist and nothing else. I have taken my motor out of the top twice and it hasn't been to bad. Just remove accessories and the intake as well as radiator etc infront of the motor and it comes right out with careful planning.

When I got my car it only had a short block in it. I figured I should just pull it from the top and I did. It was so dumb, If the heads would have been on it would have been a nightmare.

Can anybody post pictures of dropping the engine out of the bottom with out a lift??? I am not lucky enough to own a 2 post lift yet

i dont know if i would consider myself lucky to have two hoists, it is my job if i didnt have them beleive me i would not fix cars for a living. I worked on my own **** for a long time in my house garage before i opened up my own business. it was ok because it was my stuff, but after having a hoist at work for 8 hours and to come home and pull my tranny out on the floor. Suck

I've done both and I actually prefer to go out the top now. You can get them both done reasonably fast. I just don't like dropping the k-member and having to do an alignment. I always leave the heads and hood on yank it out!

What kind of vehicle? An LS1 is an engine not a car.

Took the motor and T56 out the top in my TA. Didn't have a single problem and took about 15 minutes

I have pulled a motor out the top and bottom. It easy to pull the motor out the top without pulling the heads (I've done it regardless of what everyone says the heads don't need to come off) but it is a two to three person job job one to hold the hood, one to guide the motor, and one to operate the cherry picker. Hands down the bottom is the route to go if you don't have the people to help. It's also easier if you have a lift but it can be done without one if you bolt a chain to the strut towers and use a cherry picker to pick the car off the motor and frontend assembly (I've done both ways also). Hope this helps at all.

I had never done a 4th Gen engine swap. I bought that LS1 book and dropped it out the bottom without a lift in my basement. Pretty easy job. Just have to have some sort of cart to roll the motor, trans and K member around.
