You could avoid a lot of the scratches and scrapes in your engine bay if you pulled it from the bottom.

I attached chains to my heads where accessories go etc. I didn't scratch anything in my engine bay, it's not hard from the top and it's worked for me a couple times. It can be done fast and heads stayed on mine as well as hood staying on like it is factory. No problems at all really, besides making sure you can reach the motor over the nose or from the side.

I took mine out the top, by my self, with the heads on, and the hood on. I ran the chain diagonally from the back of one head to the front of another. The only thing I didn't see anyone else mention is removing the engine mount from the K member, I think I only took off the passenger side. Doing that made enough room for me to turn the motor sideways and lift it up. It went back in just like it came out. As for being able to reach over the front with the cherry picker, I took my front bumper and core support off, and it gave me enough room.

QTP makes a tool that bolts onto where the valley cover goes. It has a hook on it to pull the engine right from the center. I just made one of my own at work. Piece of cake. We did take the hood off though, but no scratches or anything. Can't even tell it was out.

one more con to bottom, you need a couple buddies to get it back in, coming out is easy, but going in you need many eyes and hands for the struts, ect... All the 4wd s-10 blazers i have done i found it easiest to remove the body mount bolts, pick up the body and place a short 2x4 between the body and frame. this makes access to the tranny bolts and the pesky bolts on the back of the head holding the fuel lines.

Top. An hour to build a lift plate and a couple hours of disconnecting things and it's out. If you're working in a normal size 2 car garage, the bottom method doesn't work well IMHO. A car with out front suspension, a K member with suspension, an engine hoist, engine stand with engine and all of the other stuff makes for a crowded work environment... Of course, if you don't have a HOA and don't mind your stuff being pushed outside, then it's not a problem.

I'm more interested in your car being in your basement than anything else in this thread. I think we need pics of your house

Out the top, heads on, hood on. Only problem is my cherry picker arm isn't long enough even in the last bolt hole, just have to hang out there with no bolt. I can't imagine how high the car has to be off the ground to pull the engine with the bell housing and tranny attached, plus no way with the hood on.
