i just droped mine out through the bottom of my 2002 ss, just take your grounds loose and wiring harness loose from the body and computer and throw it on top of the motor while droping it down, you can unplug the wiring from the motor when you drop the motor out.....

Simple unbolt and drop. ( a few things need unbolting but common sense.) And coming out the top, im sure its fun crawling around under the car to try and get it lined up. How many people does that take? No way id take it through the top. ...way more work.

To go through the top IIRC you need to remove the heads, etc. So stick to the easy way
Theres also those guys who like to build model ships inside glass bottles...lol.

I thought these motors were the "*****" so you always start with the top first.

Having a lift now makes it much easier to take one out of the bottom..

i did it last night through the top. I had a buddy make a plate like qtp sells. We just used the valley cover for a pattern. The heads stayed on only think i took off was the accessories intake an valve covers . The hardest part was the two bellhousing bolts on the drivers side have to get them from underneath the car. we loosened the two bolts on the passenger side of the tranny cross member and took the two on the drivers side out.. its cake to get those two bellhouseing bolts out once you do that with a long extension or two... man that plate pulled the motor right out of there in like 10 min...now getting the exhaust off lol was like a 45 min job damn y pipe

I took it out the top. Was a peice of cake. Didnt have to bleed the brakes when I was done either. Wasnt the first motor I've taken out.
Maybe if your handi-capped you have issues with going out the top. Took 5 minutes to drop it in. Lining up the mounts is a peice of cake... unless your an idiot.

to each his own, if you like dropping the suspension and re-aligning and bleeding brakes then thats your thing.... but dont dis people who dont see the value in adding extra work. I dont know of any mechanics personaly that drop it out the bottom. I know of a person or two on here who did it but none of the mechanics I've worked with would do it that way.

Viper, why did you use both sides of the chain in the front istead of diagnolly front to back? Did you need that much angle to clear? or was there just not enough room to get a chain way back there?

First time doing it, found it easy to maneuver for us. I imagine the QTP plate method is easier. The above pictures are motor going in; here is motor coming out. I'm guessing there are easier ways than what we chose to attach to.

I pulled it out the bottom. No messing around with headers or shitty bellhousing bolts. Did it with myself and another friend.

I agree with blanco!

My son and I have done it several times out the top. After the first time it is easy as pie. Only problem I have is bugging my friend to charge up my AC every time I put it back together. Plus space is a premium if you are in a two car garage with one side full of the wife's stuff.

Thats funny, me and a buddy did something similar with a 97 383 lt1 car. We put the car sitting on its rims under the frame, cut the whole clip off with a torch. We had a large forklift, and just dropped the motor onto the forks, tranny attached
