Trucks are a different story they have more room for removal. F bodys don't have that much room.

Horsepower TV on the spike channel did a show on removing the engine from a camaro from the bottom.

It takes about an hour to drop it out the bottom....thats including eating and socializing with friends in the process.

i was about to take mine out through the bottom 2 days ago until i came across this thread. i saw the video of that qtp valley cover plate and immidiately knew the top was the way to go. i fabricated my own lifting plate and within minues the engine was out the top. GENIOUS! i would never bother with the bottom after this

Right now all the accessories, radiator, heads, etc are off my engine...I don't see how it can be so difficult for the engine and trans to come out the top with the lift plate. My dad and I did a 502/TH400 swap in our chevelle....these 4th gen parts look like little toys by comparison. I vote top....with the right equipment, it cannot be any tougher than having to get your car 3' off the ground, bleed brakes, and have the whole k member to deal with.

i do the bottom just due to my bad luck in general with things like dropping the engine on my fender or putting it through my windshield at risk. And i like lifting the car off the ground at a 45-60 degree angle. I love the looks on my neighbors face's when they see me with front of the car 4ft in the air and the k member and engine laying on the ground. i can read their minds "wtf is he doing?"

I vote bottom. The only hard part with that is having the right stuff to get the car high enough to roll the engine and trans from under it. When we took my buddies engine out it just made it maybe had about and inch or so of clearance left and the car was as high as we were going to get it with the equipment we had.

I pulled my engine AND transmission out of mine from the top. Heads remained on and all. Only thing I had to remove was the accessories and the crank pulley. I even left the A/C condenser in. This way was easier for me because I don't have a lift, I didn't have to get an alignment afterwards, and I didn't have to recharge the A/C or refill the PS pump or bleed the brakes anything else.

I vote TOP. Ive done both and the bottom is a little bit more work from my experience. Like has been said if you have a car lift the bottom is alright but still more work in my opinion. Disconnecting brake lines and having to get car aligned up again ect. I like Chevychads picture and have never tried or seen it came out the top with the transmission with it but I unbolt the trans and remove it before pulling the motor.

Thumbs up

Bottom for me...

I had the advantage of the lift, but it was the way to go, IMHO.

...having something heavy duty enough to rest the motor, kmember, transmission, shocks, struts, etc on was the tricky part.

I put the car back together myself, however... Didn't need anyone there to put the K-member back on.

Brakes were no biggie. I didn't need an alignment afterwards. (I went to get one, but it was in spec...) That's the execption to the rule though I think...

Out the bottom for me - used a cherry picker to lift the front of the car up.

To go through the top IIRC you need to remove the heads, etc. So stick to the easy way
i have removed so many ls1 engines thru the top
never have had to remove anything besides exhaust y pipe, disconnect wiring,
and coolant/ac plumbing.
no nned for any other tools besides a engine hoist and 4 large jackstand, and a jack. never have had to remove the stock intake or heads.
thats news to me
now i have removed thru the bottom also, but this was done in the instance when stock kmember was to be replaced with tubular.
vote for top
have always done it this way, always will.
unless kmember is being replaced with tubular

me too, t56, th400, 4l60e, 4l80e
have removed ls1's with those trans attached to it thru the top and with the hood on car. even lt1's thru the top with t56 and 4l60e
takes me longer to label wiring and grounds, than to pull engine
