Default Melling 10296

Well working on the new motor ended up being a pain to get the double roller and the melling oil pump to clear. We had to grind on the rear of the oil pump where the oil pick-up tube mates to the oil pump for clearance of the chain. Then the entire face of the oil pump has to be taken off and ground down completely flat with the rest of the front face. Basically this takes away the material they have added in the cast for stregnth which ends up being about .065" give or take a couple thousandths. You must also swap all the bolts for cap screws in the cover and for the oil pump to block with spacers supplied with the double roller timing chain. Well after we did that ended up having to clearance the back of the front cover where the front seal is. There wasn't any clearance there after milling the front cover flush so we took about .020" which with the gasket and it being compressed we ended up with about .010" clearance. This was not a simple bolt on, but I will say the chain and the pump are both awesome pieces, it just sucks they're not made to go hand in hand. Thanks to Jason 99 T/A for his advice on it. This would be much easier having already done it once.

It was blackish cast all over. It's like it has a protective coating. It was a lot of work, but I feel a lot better having the pump and the double roller.

okay, that pump has a slightly bigger relief in it than the old one for double row t/c set, but it's still not enough. You picked the baddest oil pump out right now for the ls1 engine family, you won't be disappointed by it.

Sorry for the hijack, but the Melling pump is a very nice piece. I used the tighter spring on it and get 75-80 psi with 10w30 on a cold start at 1200+ RPMs. When it's warmed up, I get more along the lines of 55 at idle and 65 at speed.

Of course, there are no fitment problems with an LS2 chain.
