Default Whether to get a cam

Well, I had a lifter collapse in my LS1 and I am taking it to Pavlock Performance to get LS7 lifters all the way around. I was thinking about just saying **** it and getting a cam in there while I am. Only problem is I am through stock manifolds, and stock clutch. I was going to do the supporting mods myself, but I am just thinking while its at the shop why don't I get the big thing out of the way.

Would the stock clutch even last through a few 400hp dyno pulls (if I made it there through stock manifolds)? Just wondering if this is a bad idea.

im not very informed on the 6 spd but i know with the cam you'll still make power just not as much as if you had a better exhaust and aftermarket intake unless you have an 01-02 ls1 b/c they come with the ls6 intake so imo it would'nt be worth dropping another $500 on an intake that may give you a 2 hp gain. If your looking to make 375+ hp be looking forward to buying a new rearend because that 10 bolt wont hold for long

Thanks. Thats another thing I was worrying about is that pos 10 bolt. I mean I am going to be on street radials breaking them loose I am sure. Is it really going to be that bad when its impossible to get traction as it sits. I dont plan on getting on it from a stop.

Still want to know if the clutch is going to blow on it really quick. As I said I would really like to just get that cam, but if that means I am going to dig myself a hole with the clutch, and make shitty numbers with out all the bolt ons then I will go about it the right way.

a friend of mine has over 500 to the rear wheels and she still has the stock 10 bolt

he needs headers if he wants a good cam, let your engine breathe better!!!!

You'll be fine with the stock manifolds for now. I'd definately look into them when you get a chance though. As for the rear end. Just be careful with it. My cars been running at above 360 for almost all it's life and right at 400 for the last year and a half and the rear end is in perfect condition and I drive it like I stole it all the time Just looked at it at work the other day in fact, but maybe I'm just one of the lucky ones.

Keep in mind that to replace the lifters in an LS1 the heads and exhaust manifolds have to come off. What to upgrade depends on your budget. They can either bolt your stock heads back on or you could get some better heads to put on instead - no difference in labor cost. Cam also would go in easy with the heads off and lifters out. And since the exhaust manifolds are off why not upgrade to headers as well.

As for the clutch I just dyno'd at 390rwhp in october with my stock clutch. I'm at about 114k miles so the clutch is my next project in the spring.

go for it dude. your stock clutch and tires will slip before the rear end breaks. it's the initial shock of a hard launch in the M6 cars that break 10-bolts. stalls in autos absorb A LOT of shock, hence 10-bolts lasting a little longer in A4 cars. i didn't break my 10-bolt, but have a 9" now due to my old gear whining so much i couldn't stand it, and needed the rear end anyway...i made 393 with a 231/237 cam and bolt-ons in a '01 M6. my clutch was what slowed me down, but saved my rear-end too...

im no expert on these cars just relaying info on alot of input ive read so far and seen that the 6 speeds seem to blow the stock 10 bolt even under stock power sometimes if your doing some hard launches its just an idea of what you might have to look at in the future
