Bought supposed 99 LS1 engine but has 241 heads, what year is it really?
I bought this engine from Ebay it supposedly is from a 1999 Camaro Z28. I never really questioned the year as i didnt think it made much of a difference but i have been reading alot of threads that have been talling me that it does. What else can i look for to determine the year? I sold the computer and intake and all. Intake was definately an LS1 intake. The engine was bone stock, atleast everything that i removed. Springs, camshaft and all. I dont think this motor has 60,000miles on it. It is so extremely clean inside. There is still perfect crosshatching on the cylinder walls and just overall the engine was extremely clean.
Anyway It has 241 heads on it. They are not ported and had stock valve springs on them. It definately did have an LS1 intake on it. This was pretty dirty when i removed it, not as clean as the heads intake ports i dont think.
Are there any differences in the blocks that i would be able to tell? Are there any date codes on the block or the heads? I'm curious to see if maybe they had the heads replaced under warranty or the entire longblock to see if i got updated rod bolts. Is there anyway to tell that?

Are there any date codes on these types of blocks that i could check out? Or anything i could look for on the block that would help me identify the year? The engine is still out of the car without a flywheel. but i reassembled the whole front and bottom of the engine. Intake is still off too.

Look at the injectors. I believe the injectors got smaller as the years progressed. Also I want to say early LS1's had the coil packs individually bolted on the valve cover as opposed to the later being bolted together on a bar. I have never pulled the motor out of my car, but if Chevy kept to their way of doing things, there should be a block casting number on the rear of the block drivers side near where the bell housing would bolt up. That casting number may help you narrow down when the block was made. Also should be a crank casting number as well.

The 01-02 blocks had the center bolt valve covers and the 98-00 had the perimeter style bolts on the valve covers. Hope this helps clarify, even if it is a 99 engine I'd be happy to get the better heads.

Only the 98 heads had perimeter bolts. The injector won't help b/c it had an LS1 intake, so there is no telling whether or not the injectors were the originals. It is most likely an 01 or 02 b/c very few 00 models got the 241 heads. An ls1 is an ls1 the year model is irrelevant. The sleeves are slightly thinner on the 97 and 98 blocks all other years are exactly the same, which isn't a concern unless you want to hone for larger pistons. The 01 and 02 had better rod bolts than previous years, but that's not a big deal either. As long as it looks good internally just run the thing. And if anyone asks tell them it's a 2020 model.

Speaking of misinformation. There are no 99's that got 241's, they all got 853's.
From the STICKIES:
933 97 aluminum perimeter bolt 5.7
806 97-98 aluminum perimeter bolt 5.7
853 99-00 aluminum center bolt 5.7
241 01-03 aluminum center bolt 5.7 (some late MY00 cars got 241 castings)
243 LS6 aluminum center bolt 5.7
862 and 706 99 and up 4.8-5.3 truck heads
873 99-00 LQ4 6.0 iron center bolt heads
317 01 and up LQ4 6.0 aluminum center bolt heads
035 02 and up LQ9 6.0 aluminum center bolt heads

Im not sure about a date being on the block but I have a date on my head right above the #1 plug.
thing I cant understand is I have 806 heads and the date says 2002

I was wondering because i was going to get a bearing kit and wanted to make sure i knew what year my block was. I was also wondering if i had upgraded rod bolts. Injectors and intake were both stock LS1 im running carbed so that doesnt matter to me. 241s all have centerbolts covers i know the heads. I just wanted to find the date of the block to see if just the heads were unstalled underwarranty or an entire longblock.

Here is the most definitive article that I know of regarding Gen III engine variations and good information in general about rebuilding them without modification http://www.enginebuildermag.com/Arti...all_block.aspx.

The bearings are the same in all LS1's w/ the exception of the cam bearings. Which are different in 04 and newer blocks. The newer blocks also use all the same length headbolts versus the 4 shorter bolts on the front and rear of the older blocks. So if you had the heads off you'll have all the info you need to get bearings.
