Default GM Hot Cam Setup?

I was thinking about getting the GM Hot Cam for my 2001 LS1 F-body but I have some questions:

first, is this cam worth the $600 that it is priced at or is there a better one for that price?

Anyone know of a site that offers it cheaper than $600 (Thunderracing.com)?

Do I need to install anything else with the cam(it comes in a kit) like new heads or crank?

Should I go with putting on a 90mm intake manifold and throttle body before getting the cam?

All input is very much apprecitated!

Thank You.

Seriously, you gotta do some searching as this question has been asked 8.2 million times. I of all people am not trying to be a internet dick. Check at Scoggin Dickey---->
Great prices, great sponsor. You're gonna get way more people to say not to buy one that ones who say to buy one. A Fast 90 setup is crazy money unless you already have heads/cam and all other bolt ons. Some have lost power bolting on a Fast intake with basic bolt ons.

I think I got my Hot Cam kit from Scoggin Dickey, so yeah, there are others. I made just under 400rwhp & ran 12.14 with the cam, headers, an LSX intake & a ported 78mm TB. 1.8 rockers wake it up even more, and if you're paranoid about the stock needle bearings taking 6500 rpm you'll replace them anyway.....

There's no such thing as a budget when it comes to performance, much less, LS1 performance.

If you are considering the "Hot Cam" you might consider the ZO6 cam.Less duration more lift.$300-350 cam and lifters

Just go with the LS6 intake, a 228 range cam, ~3600 stall if it's an A4, underdrive pulley, and some decent heads. After that, you still really don't need the 90mm intake/tb.

^^^ClueLess!!^^^

I made 393 and 370TQ with Cam only and the mods in my SIG! thru an M6.
after the Ported FAst 90, UMI throttle body and Delphi 85mm MAFS(dont get an SLP or granatelli they are garbage just get your tuner to dial it in for you) I made 406hp and 378TQ.
My last mods were a set of Harland Sharp 1.8's and while I was getting it re-tuned at StraightLine I maxxed out my injectors, so I decided to upgrade my injectors to Lucas 36lbs'ers and since my lift changed to .556 w/ the rockers and the Ls6 springs are rated at .570max. I decided to upgrade my Springs to patriot golds from Speedinc. Then I will go back for a re-tune and feel safe with my **** on the dyno while tuning! I also dont have to worry about spring life, and I can run my AC on these hot humid days in Chi-town and in traffic!
A knife to a gun fight?? I dont think so!!!
If and when you do these mods do it all at once so you dont need to go back for retunes.
Remember, always upgrade never replace!
Yes SDPC is a sponsor and has the best prices for the HotCam, ASA cam and the Grand Am cup CAM!!
You will need to upgrade...in my opinion...
* Oil pump, I bought a melling and left the high pressure spring in it, I get 5? lbs at start up and 7? at wide open throttle!
http://www.ls1speed.com/cont.cfm?cid=C0000699

* Timing Chain, I bought an Ls2 chain and saw my sprockets were ok, check them and replace them the Ls2 Timing chain will slip right in and itis quite thicker!

* Pushrods, stock ones suck so I bought Compcam chromoly for like 9? bux and never worry about them again. stock lenght is 7.4in. that is what you will need.
http://www.ls1speed.com/cont.cfm?cid=C0000153
CC7955-16 Chrome Moly Pushrods 7.400 (Stock Length) $114.99 buy

* Since they will be removing the crank pulley, get a powerbond pulley and it comes with a new crank bolt, you will need 2 smaller belts too, and dont forget to have your tuner raise the idle to about 950-1000

I sent you a link to speedinc where I have gotten most of my stuff, they are a sponsor and have free shipping. But its up to you, its just so you have an idea. Shop around and decide for yourself
Never mind some guys who say its a waste of time, its an old design(like cams have change, only their ramps) you dont need a msdonkeydick3 or 4, or a T-AlabamablacksnakeREX Cam especially if its a daily driver those cams loose the Torque down low and spinnn up to 7k and up. I like my power under the curve! but thats just me. Just get what YOU want and compliment your mods!

scoggins dickey---> sponseror...they got the kit for 479.99....you cant beat the price for a cam and valve springs...great kit if you are looking for a mild power gain and great "lope"...the hotcam+springs and supporting mods should be good for 360-390HP at the wheels and sometimes more like the guy who posted above this...you will not have to change heads...but a set of LS6 243s would do the cam some justice...you do not need a 90mm intake or throttle body for this cam...a stock or ported LS6 intake and ported stock throttle body should be MORE then what you need....get that cam in it and have some fun!

I been looking at the hot cam and the 224 cams and they just seem to do everything better for about 100 bucks more. if u want sound get it on a 112.

Or you can do an ASA cam too..
GMPP Hot Cam
218/227 int/exh @ 0.05" duration
0.525" / 0.525" int/exh lift
112 LSA
GMPP ASA Cam
226/236 int/exh @ 0.05" duration
0.525" / 0.525" int/exh lift
110 LSA

To the guy above me, I said it was bringing a knife to a gunfight. I never said the cam was bad. I'm sorry if you got butthurt over it. It's just that there are a LOT of daily driver cams out there that do a better job. I've always seen the hotcam package as a sound/appearance mod as much as a performance mod. There is no doubt your going to gain power with it. Its just how much your going to gain. If he is even thinking of a 90mm intake setup he probably has better options out there. You can drive an upper 220's cam on a 114 or 112 LSA like a stock car now. Tuning has come a long ways. As someone else stated, it is a good starter cam, that's it. There isn't anything wrong with it at all. I would just suggest some more research before clicking the buy button.

I'm running a hotcam right now and I am thinkin about swappin it out for something bigger. If you can find JUST the cam then you can get the same springs (LS6) from SDPC for like $60... or they used to be. If you are willing to wait a few months then I will yank mine out and sell it for much cheaper than the kit. I could sell the LS6 springs too I guess, if someone wanted them.

Your Ls6 should be good for that CAM. But I gained 13hp with the FAST, I got mine because I am planning on some trickflows soon.

If you don't have a fully optimized suspension and rear end, IE - able to launch at 5000 or more and hooking, most cams aren't going to do much more for you at the track. If they make more power, you'll spin more as well. It's all a catch 22 really. You can find hotcams on ebay and in the for sale section here pretty cheap.
