Default Best Budget Head.

For a budget head that runs, I'g go with a T4P valve job, valves, springs and retainers on a 243.

If I wanted to spend some serious money I'd go with their CNC stuff on an aftermarket casting.

Clearly you have never had your heads on a flow bench. I have, before and after having them hand ported. They do NOT flow what they claim, not even close.

Patriot Stage 1 (2.00”/1.55”) LS6 heads live under my hood. I cannot comment yet. Hopefully I will be re-dynoing soon w/ an issue or two resolved. If I remember, I will post results. There are some die-hard Patriot haters out there. If I put down decent numbers though, I will be pretty happy with my $1025 (shipped) investment.

I am glad I found this thread. I am going to run the TR230 cam. I was looking at the PRC stage 2.5 5.3 heads. I have not heard of some of the other budget heads. I am not wanting to have to fly cut my pistons and I want a smaller runner to help velocity.

What are different about the LS6 style head over the 5.3? Forgive my lack of knowledge. I am new to LS engine.

I have several people say they had bad experiences with Patriots, what was the problem?

Thanks.

The biggest difference is the 5.3's have smaller combustion chambers to bump up compression. They flow about the same as an LS6 head too.

I am wondering the same thing. I am getting my cam from Thunder Racing. I don't think they sale PRC heads though. I will probably have to get them from TSP.

I looked at their site. If you already have a set of LS6 heads you are all set, if not..it's an extra 800 bucks.

Yep.

Too answer the first question, get the best you can afford, not strictly the cheapest, as it is rarely the best value.

I cant vote, but Id pimp patriots. For the price, theres a few heads that all perform similarly. Patriot gets a bad rap from some since rectified issues in the distant past. But gunnars customer service is second to none. Really good guy. Hard to go wrong with any of those choices. Theyre all pretty close, it comes down to who you want to buy from, and how well theyll stand behind their product.

There is no comparison between PRC and Patriot. The PRC heads make big power ever time. This equates into more hp per doller spent. PRC hands down.

Depending on how low or cheap you want to go you can get a set of LS2 budget heads for $600 which are basically LS6 heads without the hollow valves. These are not ported but do flow 260cfm out of the box.

I wonder why TR dosent offer any budget heads? seems like they have the good cams and they want a 500$ core charge on their $1500 heads?
how bout it Speed Inc, Patriot, Thunder who's got any tax time deals?

Richard at WCCH used to do some great Stage 2 5.3 heads. Not sure if he's still doing them but worth a call.

My $.02
