Default MS4 Gains?

alright so im doing my fair share of research on cams..i learned you can never learn too much. anyway i come accross a thread with some curiosity behind an ms5? googled ms5 and did not find anything. so out of complete instinct, i googled ms4...i see "The MS4 camshaft is the result of extensive engine dyno testing & research! Engine dyno results have shown over 80 horsepower gains with no other changes on a stock 2001 LS1 engine!!" linked directly to texas-speed's website...a little further down "This camshaft typically gains approximately 60+rwhp!"...

people claim a lot of power when it comes to cam only applications. i wanted an ms4 for a long time till i read up on the trex, and that immidiately caught my interest...

heres my question...

is there anyone out there who has a ms4 only car with 'no other changes to an ls1 engine' thats making anywhere near these gains?

with the MS4 you have to have a good flowing exhaust to get the full benefit of that size of a cam, if you use stock manifolds it will hold you back and it will be hard to find someone on here that has a MS4 only car. Try getting exhaust before you get the cam or you wont gain much.

put it this way!

my friend has a stock catback on his car to make it quiet around town. with pacesetter LTs, 3inch custom ORY, and a cutout. with cutout closed he lost 40rwhp!!! that is a FAT difference! i would not put an ms4 without anyother mods in the car. put all the exhaust parts you need atleast so it can breathe. these big cams dont like back pressure. and you will not make any powere if you leave everything else stock. what they mean by not other changes is probably heads, intake, and stuff like that.

yes and your gonna need to upgrade the pushrods, springs, but you can use stock heads and stock rockers. So get exhaust first then put the cam in or you will hate it, and also you could always run open headers if you dont want to get full exhaust lol.

he would also need a speed density tune. or the 02s will get burnt everytime. or atleast get the pipe brought out abit from the headers.

yea well in order to get full benefit of any mod such as this the tune is implied lol, other wise you will be idling all over the place and yes your air/fuel ratio will suck major *****.

haha sorry guys i should probably mention now that if your referencing me putting an ms4 cam in...i have full exhaust (no cats) and intake...thats why im looking to a cam for my next move...unless i put in the stall which would probably be the better first move...but its really posssible then to make those gains with full exhaust and intake?

yes it is possible.

and put the stall in first! u will be happy you did. driveability sux wit a cam and no stall. i did it for almost a year. when i finally put my stall in i was so much happier, and the car go so much faster. i can shread 315 drag radials like nuthing.

i have the ms3. i love my cam. and they say the ms4 will out perform the ms3. but i will prove that statement wrong!

I was gonna go with a 4k stall before i blew my tranny up at the track, but for it third gear slipping and not going in when i had it floored towards the end of my run a 13.0 wasnt to bad lol. Then she blew and now i got me a 6 speed so that pretty much took care of that little problem.

I just saw a grand total of 38 RWHP gain from the time I bought my car to the installation of full exhaust. Torque went up 44 total foot-pounds. This is EXHAUST ONLY. (prep-work for a cam change)

Good luck.

call texas speed.... they will answer any questions.. a typical cam only w/ supporting boltons.. (ms4 that is...).. with an a4.. is going to be min. of 390 to the ground.. typical is 400-410... high would be 415 and up...

My buddy 99huggercamaro just had speed inc. put 1 in and tune it and it made 425 hp and 383 tq. He has true duals over the axle, hooker headers, lid,p&p tb,and under drive pulley. When I looked at the sheet it made 350 hp at 4800 rpm and the good power wasnt till 6k plus. By the time the car makes that power you have to shift gears. Not sure what I think of it yet. I could tell you that the drivability is amazing and he is m6 with 3.73 gear and the cam was a 112 lsa.

What are you talking about??? good power till 6K? Do a search, I posted my numbers per rpm. It made over 300lbs/tq from 2,700rpm-6,500rpm.

Yes, this cam needs to breath, and yes you will be reving the engine to 7k with the right mods. In an auto, I would think a 4,500stall and 4.10 gear would be ideal....If you think a 4.10 gear in a ten bolt is a smart idea...
