Default Dangers of CheckEngine light

ok my 99 camaro LS1 has aftermarket exhaust and because i have no cats i also dont have my rear bank o2 sensors. i have an engine light. now is this harmless or is my car going to be negetively affected in any way by this engine light being triggered?

Im thinking that it wont change how my car runs or give me any problems, because the engine light is just on because its not picking up a signal from the rear o2 sensors to monitor the cats if my car had them. but i heard something the other day bout my car might be in a detuned mode due to the engine light? so i dont know if maybe the camaros have somethign special programmed in them to do this?

anybody who has a definite answer would be appreciated! thnx

as far as im aware the only thing that rear o2s are for is like u stated to monitor the cats, and it should not affect the way ur cars runs/behaves, only the upstream o2s affect driveability. jus have annoying yellow glow at nites

A solid light is an emission code. A blinking light is a misfire. Pay no attention to the solid lights and stop driving the car ASAP with a blinker.

Yeah, pretty much the only downside to having the light on all the time is in some states you won't pass emissions with it on. Also I guess with it on for a reason you are aware of, if it comes on for something you don't know about, you're left in the dark.

another problem with your light staying on is that you wont be know if ur car has any other new important codes

Scan tools are getting really cheap these days, I think I saw one for $30+ somewhere. At least you can find out what code is being set and turn it off.

Light is to be expected. I would invest in a scanner or get 02 sims.

it is just a solid light and i already hooked up a snap-on scanner to know its an O2 sensor code, and well since i dont have either rear bank O2's installed, ding ding ding. lol i guess ill leave it for now, since shes in winter storage neways, but ill eventually buy O2 simulators. i dont wanna have to rescan it every week just to make sure theres no new codes(if I left it alone and let the light be on all the time)

thanx for all ur help!
