How do you remove the crankshaft timing chain gear..Help asap please

Default How do you remove the crankshaft timing chain gear..Help asap please

I'm in the middle of a h/c swap and we cant get the bottom timing chain gear off of the crankshaft. Is a special tool needed or something? thanks

oil pump is off..but the gear doesn't just slide off. gonna try a pully puller tomorrow

IIRC I put a big wrench behind it and gave it a lil tap taparoo while prising on it..

Yes, there is a special tool. If you look on Ebay you can pick it up for about $10. I would be careful here, you don't want to damage the machining on the crank or the block.

too bad ls1howto didn't mention that it is needed.


pulley puller just keeps slipping off...who knew that it would take 3 hours working on this and it still isn't off

just did it the other night with a 3 jawed puller, (after removeing oil pump of course)

finally got it...had to grind down the hooks on the puller

Not all 3 jaw pullers are created equal. If you have a friend to hold the jaws in place while you tighten it, that may help. If not, use another puller.

There is a tool for that as well, and it also will double for the front pulley.

Just for ***** and giggles, When I took the stock one off, I had to cut the bitch on one side. it was hard as hell. Then when I did my second cam swap, I already had the double roller on it and that one came of easily!
