Default What is needed for a cam install?

Im not talking about tools but I want to know what I need to complete a successful and safe cam setup. I know I dont need titanium retainers because the biggest cam im going with is a 230 duration. I just need the mandatory things such as pushrods, valve springs, and etc. Its for a 02 ss a4.

Here's a good writeup:

That topic is pretty common. If you read in this room daily you will see it discussed quite a bit. Search is also a powerful tool.

You only need to upgrade your lifters and springs, but thats the bare minimum i would upgrade my pushrods to hardened ones also. Brandon

cam, springs, pushrods, gaskets, new crank bolt, lifters are needed unless you feel like pulling the heads for no reason

and most importantly

I do not think you would need lifters.

thanks a lot. Why do most places try to sell you titanium retainers if they are not needed. I think they should recommend them if your doing a big cam instead for safety purposes not for a small one.

they rec titanium retainers because they are lighter

more weight + high rpms + more agressive cam = valve float

dual valve springs are cheap and have a lot of other benifits beside being stronger.

If you are going with a 230/xxx cam you would need dual anyhow unless you are under .600 lift. if you are close to .600 i would get them as a safety precaution.

You do not need new lifters- the stock ones are good, and untill recently most people with big or small cams would leave the stockers in.

yup... yeah i wouldnt really worry about the lifters with that low of miles on the car unless you have the money to spend.
