What does it take to get a 383 to hit 500 RWHP ?
Im in the process of putting a new motor in my car and havent yet decided between a 347 and a 383. I have AFR 205 59cc heads that I must use. I also have a g5x3 114 cam that I can either use or get a new one. Im looking for a very reliable 500 rwhp motor that runs on pump gas. I also run nitrous but dont plan on anything over 150 shot. This is going into a MN6 corvette. Thanks for the advise.

go with the 383,bigger is always better. The 205's are a little small but could be opened up to work better with the bigger cubes.Get a custom cam to work with everthing else. With the right combo 500rwhp is quite easy

I hate to step on a sponsors toes (Shawn) but afr 205s are plenty big enough for a 383. So many people have made over 500 rwhp (530/510) with the afr 205's. Granted a set of tfs 215's would help the cause and move up the peak hp number, but under the curve is the most important and we all know this.
BLACK Beauty, keep this in mind. A well built 383 won't make "MUCH" more hp then a 346 but it will out produce it on the torque side, by at least 30 rwtq with all things being equal. I've seen a few 383's come real close to 500 rwtq. However that was a truly OPTIMIZED setup. High dollar stuff very well thought out and light weight, dyno friendly drive line. M6 setup too.

The 205 heads from AFR should get you there. Just for comparison I was making 487 rwhp with out the box Dart 205s milled for 59 cc chambers. I was running a Futral 239/243 cam and the combo was a blast to drive. The hp will all be in the cam selection for those heads.

Thats good to know. I have a g5x3 114 cam but I think the 383 will take something a little bigger. I am still undecided on what shortblock I want.....Yes, im one of those people who can never seem to decide haha

Well here is a list of the parts I ended up using Diamond Pistons, Manley rods, and a Callies crank. I had my existing block machined and used ARP studs throughout. The setup is holding up to 700 rwhp.

I am only making 558/515 with my present set up and going through the traps at 136 MPH +. Damn with that 700 rwhp you must have a trap speed of 145 mph +...right?

No actually it is. I have a few tricks up my sleeve. I was making 600 rwhp on a 100 shot. I have not made it to the track yet with the gas though. As I was working out some spark plug issues. The engine runs fine with Tr6 plugs so I needed to get some NGK 7 heat range plugs, which just came in.

The 71 is slowly coming along. I need to take some pictures as I have the frame stripped of all parts right now. I need to take it out to be cleaned and powder coated though. After that I will probably hit the small parts more so I can begin the chassis reassembly.
