well Id take it to a mechanic that has the right adapter tool to read the exact press. it threads on the pan in place of the oil filter. we need to know how high is way way high.

did you also have a new oil pump installed? or did he port it? who knows what it is, but the valve in the oil pump could be stuck?

just to answer the question, no its not normal. I gained roughly 10-15psi after my swap, but I ported the stock pump, and shimmed the spring.

I guess you could also start with the question what was the warm idle pressure BEFORE you did heads and cam? If it was like 30, and now its 45-50 you just helped yourself out, but if its closer to 60-80 you might have created a restriction when installing the lifters and oil pump somewhere.

What type of oil pump? I got my LPE pump and left the high pressure spring in (there is a high and low pressure spring sent with some pumps) and just cranking my engine over with new autometer gauge and sender i get 55psi. I have yet to start it but expect very high pressure.

What kind of pump did you put on? Pressure will vary a little from one pump to the next, but if the unit you got had a stiffer/shimmed relief spring it will cause higher pressure at idle, especially when cold.

My LT1 with 151K on the longblock idles at 30psi and cruises at 40psi. I would think 55psi idling wouldnt be bad and 60-70 psi cruising would be fine. MY Duramax is 80psi cruising cold, 60psi cruising warm and idles around 25psi warm with 184k. I have yet to start my ls1 though.

The ported LS6 pump will have higher pressure than your stock one. A lot higher. I wouldnt worry about it. Its not unusual to peg the oil gauge with that pump at WOT.

I just put on the LPE pump, with high pressure spring too, and it sets right about 70 psi at idle. Its fine. Once im at WOT, the gauge is pegged.

55# at cold Idle you are looking good ... 70 # at idle and pegging the gauge I would worry about.
