Head gaskets
I think you can use either,or maybe there is a notch in one I remember something about that. IMO the MLS(Multi-layered steel) would be a better choice, but if you are going to put the money into AFRs why not use Cometics and get a higher compression ratio out of it?
You really need to know what thickness of gasket you need. Are you milling the heads?? If so how much?? What are the cam specs??
I run a 224/.581 cam w/5.3 heads milled .018" on top of the cheapo(17.99 @ Autozone) FelPro stock LS1 replacement gaskets sprayed with copper. Been on there almost 7 months & not a single issue.

I haven't had a single issue. Just sprayed them with the copper spray, put them on the block & set the heads down on them. Then bolted them down exactly to a "T" per the torque specs.
Block cleaning is where alot of people mess up. Also following the proper torque specs & procedure. These work fine for me, but my cam has far less lift also.
I would think they would work fine for you also though since they are a little thicker than .040" compressed.

I have the MLS gaskets on my 99. The only problems were they didnt seal to some of the early heads with the notch in the middle.
THe MLS gaskets held a 200 shot the piston let go before the gasket.
