Default Wierd oil pressure problem

I'm sure a few of you seen me post in the other thread but I believe my problem is a little more complex than what I originally thought. When I first start the car up it idles at 60 psi when warm it drops to about 20-30. No here's the wierd part. If I just go through the rev range without mashing it. Oil pressure is about 60-70. As soon as I mash it...it drops. WTF? My first thought is that when I put load on the motor it creating excessive clearence somewhere and allowing too much oil through. So I think its a bearing. The only problem with that being is it makes no funny sounds, and there are no shavings in the oil. I've already checked the oil pump o-ring and I was fixing to swap the pump until I discovered the WOT thing. That makes me think its not the pump because the pump is RPM based as it runs off the crank. Load shouldn't affect it right? I'm really at a loss. What could it be? I don't even know where to begin. Somebody help me.

BTW congrats to MTI for winning Pinks all out last night.

It sound like a crank bearing going bad. I think I would still replace the pump. How many miles on the pump?

Good luck.

The pumps nearly brand new. I guess I put it in back in December, so 5 months. Its been doing this for about 3 or 4 months though. It may have 5k miles on it at best, probably not even that. That's a high guess.
The bottom end has 81k on it.
Thanks for your post even though that's not exactly what I wanted to hear.
That's about what I was expecting though. Thanks man.

^ already have. I've changed the oil right after the install and once since then. Mobil 1 filter the first time and K&N the second. I wish that would fix it. Good suggestion though.

I had a little 4 cyl. s-10 when I was 17 and one day it dropped oil pressure exept it went to 0 I pulled it over and oil was going everywhere so I had a flat bed come get it and got it home put some oil in it started it up, 60 psi. It was the oil filter. For some reason it just kinda locked up and pushed oil out the seal. It just happened to be a Fram too. That's the reason I won't run a Fram.

Thanks for the post.

Anybody else?

If oil pressure drops when you step on the gas, more than likely, it's a bearing.

Bearing would be my guess, but then again, I've had my oil bypass valve stick open on my oil pump. If I were you, I'd double (Triple) check that bypass in the oil pump to make sure the spring hasnt gone weak or it isnt hanging up on debris.

Same thing is happening to me. I'm figuring it's the bearings. Building another enginge right now.

Before you do anything else I would check it with a mechanical guage

^ That's what I'm going to do. The engine has no side effects. No noises, no shavings, runs just as good as ever. I really hope its just a bad sending unit. I'll keep you guys posted.

If an oil pressure sending unit went bad.. would the gauge still fluxuate.. or would it just go to zero and stay?

^ good question. I would like to know that as well. I've had quite a few people tell me to throw a mechanical gauge on it though. So I'm going to give it a try and see if it says the same thing as the one that's in the car.

im having the same problem iron 370 ive called up w2w and talked to one of their engine builders he said check to see if they put a shim in my oil pump and the o ring he said if your getting no noise and no shavings that i should be fine. just a low oil pressure motor as long as the pressure goes up with rpms..

No telling how it will act. It will just be inaccurate. I have seen them low or fluctuate or be good one minute and very low the next. I have never seen one just read high though but maybe that's because most people won't complain about high OP. I had one on an Olds 350 that spurted oil like Jed Clampetts Texas Tea one time.
