o-ring replacement

Default o-ring replacement

In hopes of reducing ticking noises, I'm going to replace o-ring on the oil pickup tube on my 01 TA . I'm thinking the easiest way would be to drop the oil pan. Anybody have any advice on this? Is there anything tricky about getting the tube reinstalled from underneath? Thanks..

back out bolt a few threads and tie dental floss around the bolt before completely removing it. this will save a big headache if you drop it in the pan because you can just pull it out.

I would even recommend switching the pump out while your there. Cheap insurance

How does this reduce ticking noises? Just curious.

Don't go through the effort of dropping the oil pan for this task. You can definately change the bolt without doing all that. You will need to loosen all the oil pan bolts as much as they go without actually removing them so you can drop the pan at least 1/2" to get to the oil pickup tube though.

You can pick up a replacement at Home Depot in the plumbing aisle. They sell little packages (less than $2) with random o-rings. I believe there was at least 2 in the package that fit great.

Sorry, not a good idea. Orings are specially engineered for their function, meaning size, material, etc. Some will take heat, pressure, and chemicals, some will not. Always buy the correct o-ring for the specific location. In this case its not a pressure situation because its under vacuum but there are chemicals and heat present. If you know the size and material from the original o-ring its easy to buy them from many sources. You also have to be careful with bulk orings. We have found a large supplier selling a nice assortment in a nice red box from China. The orings were tested and did not meet the SAE standards.

Kalgorn, GM sent out a TSB to replace the o-ring because if it is torn it causes the oil to get air bubbles in it, thus causing a ticking noise similar to that of a lifter noise. JFM-jr, if you call the local dealership they will probably know which o-ring your looking for.

Has your oil pressure changed at all to warrant an o-ring change ? If not, I would look else where for the problem , ie: loose rockers , broken valve springs and bent or wrong size pushrods .

According to GM, Oil pressure should remain normal. Its not bleeding off pressure, its just aerating the oil.

definitely worth a shot to try...it solved my problem after my cam install..my old o-ring looked ok but obviously was warped or compressed long enough to distort it from sealing properly...should be changed every time an oil pump if removed...

definitely go to a deal to get it...i think mine was like 4 dollars...

Thanks everyone.

Got my GM o-ring (blue, PN 12557752).

Now I need to decide:
1.) Disconnect motor mounts, raise engine, remove oil pan, remove pickup and replace o-ring
OR
2.) Remove fans, water pump, belt, timing cover, oil pump, drop oil pan a little and replace o-ring

I'm thinking option 1 could be easier. Any Opinions?

option number 2...only took me like 4 hrs from start to finish by myself...once you have done it once it goes alot faster...
