How much oil do you guys lose?

How much oil do you guys lose?
Im not 100% positive if this is the right thread for this, but. my question is. I looked up alot, and searched about piston slap on this site, and i know what it is and what it does. But, i seem to be loosing a little oil over time. I know im not leaking it, and i cant see any signs of burning it whatsoever. I try real hard to see if its burning it, but i cant see any signs of it from my exhaust. i even run my fingers in the tail pipes and i cant get any oil, just carbon. I changed my oil about 400 miles ago, and when i did, i had the oil level up to about 3/4's of the way on the slatted markings on the stick. Now, it seems to be about half. I just got back from a trip totaling 300 miles. I have a nice case of piston slap on first start that gradually goes away, so keep that in mind.
Do any of you have this oil issue? Is it related to my piston slap? and is the oil consumption im having common ?
Thank you,
Dave

some cars use oil, some dont. it doesnt really seem to hurt the life of the engine as long as you keep up maintenance and dont let it get out of control. some have had the engine rebuilt only to see the same problem arise after throwing thousands of dollars at the car. if i were you i would not worry about it.

Piston slap has nothing to do with oil burning.. all these cars have it..
What deals with the amount of oil you burn is how hard you run it and how frequent you run it hard. The harder and more often you bust its *** then the more oil it is going to burn.. I usually keep an extra quart or so in the trunk just in case and always check about midway between oil changes..
Also, LS1 is synonymous with oil burner...

thanks guys, yeah i run it hard at times. i never go past 5 grand really, but i tend to take her down the road pretty well, hehe. i just went back out to the car to check it out again, letting the oil sit a little longer. when i looked at it this time, ( 2 mins ago ), the oil level seemed to be as fine as it was when i changed the oil 400 miles ago? i dont even know anymore. i think im loosing my mind. but regardless, like you guys say, its going to burn oil at some degree, but not to worry about it, just keep up with adding it when nessesary, right.

I have an '02 SS with 48,000 miles on it now. It's never burned one bit of oil between changes.
Then I put on a catch can, I can't believe how much oil it catches. It still stays on the full mark between oil changes.
I put the catch can on because I seen all the oil in the intake when I took it off. I think thats where a lot of LS1 oil burning problems come from. Sucked through the PCV system.
The harder I run it the more oil I find in the can.

my engine lives at 5000-rev limiter. all the time. mostly bouncing off the limiter. on a full day on track (about 60-80 minutes of track time) i lose generally 1/4-1/2 a quart. LOTS through blowby from the PCV.
run a catch can, it helps.

If you are stock, consider a catch can for the PCV system to help with oil use.

Oil Lose with Mobile 1
You didn't say what brand OIL you use.
I don't have piston slap that I can hear at 54,000 miles.
Switching from Mobile 1 10W30 to RedLine 10W30 cut my oil consumption by about 80%. I went through over a quart of Mobile 1 during a 100 mile run through the mountains with allot of 1st and 2nd gear up to 6500 rpm leading my wifes Porsche club on a run that I layed out. I have a catch can and it catches minimal oil. My car isn't a daily driver, cross country interstate and fun runs. 900 mile trips on I-75 to Florida, I average 70 to 71 mph and use 1 qt. of Mobile 1 every trip (at my age I make allot of pee stops and leave the rest area hard in the first 3 gears). The last trip on RedLine I didn't use any oil. I did a one day DE at VIR on RedLine and didn't use any oil and the track temps were over 120 *.

The 02 shouldn't have piston slap as it has the newer piston design introduced in March 2001. It may be carbon induced rocking that can be corrected with carbon removal. I had the same issue.

My 2002 has always had piston slap and it is not related to carbon build up.
As for oil consumption, it increases with modifications and higher RPM's. If you drive it like your granny there won't be much oil used in 3K miles. If you drive it like you stole it, you can go through several quarts in a thousand miles.

All different mobil one weights, castrol synthetic, semi syn, right now Pennszoil Platinum. 49,000---noise is still the same.
Back at 25,000 the dealer supposedly put in a new design lifter, but it never changed the noise my car makes. Since they had to take the heads off to fix a noise problem at 25,000 miles I'd like to think they cleaned any carbon build up off.
Oh yea, NOT THAT IT MATTERS it has the LS6 block.

I fill my oil 3/4 of the way up the marker every time, and every time it burns down to about 1/2 rather quickly (over a couple weeks). However, once it gets down to 1/2 it seems to hang out right there until the next oil change. I find that it just has a sweet spot that it likes.
Guess I should stop wasting the 1/4 quart to get it up to the 3/4 of the marker huh?

out of the 3-4 thats i've had for awhile, i've noticed most like to sit around the half full mark. doesnt ever really drop below that. The 8.1 on the other hand.....bout a quart every 1000miles..
