Re: spring removal tool well after my experience last week i wouldnt recomend the SLP spring tool. a simple spring change tunred into a nightmare. the tools threads went after the first 4 springs (918's). ended up useing the Sears Spring tool and it worked great, a lttle tight a times but it did the job

Re: spring removal tool go get the cheap lever type of spring compressor from napa. then, you cut the top of it down with a hacksaw so it will fit under the cowl. once you do that, all you have to do is bolt it down on the rockers and pull out the keepers, then let it back up. it's by far the easiest and cheapest tool i've used

Re: spring removal tool I have the Snap On tool, which appears to be identical to the SLP tool, and it is useless – it binds when loaded. I cleaned and lubricated the drive threads but the tool still locks up with the spring only partially compressed. This tool needs a thrust bearing or at least a washer between the drive nut and head. My guess is that the original design was better and some genius wanted to economize.

Re: spring removal tool I have both the Moore and the SLP (KD)The Moore sucks bigtime. I don't understand why you had a hard time with the KD. I used it recently on my 1.43 double springs and it worked fine.
Re: spring removal tool Tally has the best idea AND the best price. I'm going to make one of those things myself since I already have some 0.25" flat stock in the garage. Short of that you can use the OEM tool from Auto Zone. It too is free on loan. Get two while your at it and use one tool to remove one spring and the other to install the new one. You have to buy an extra retainer so you can preload one spring BEFORE removing the old one. As soon as the old spring comes out the new one goes in since it is already preloaded into the extra spring tool. No wasting time having to unload the old spring and then having to load the new spring into the same spring tool. This method saves a lot of time.
