Ive never heard my car sound like this before... advanced the cam 2* tonight, started it up and it sounds like... well... really loud. Exhaust and engine are louder than I have ever heard it. Doesnt sound like anything is tapping... it's just REALLY loud. Never heard sound like this after a cam swap or anything.

Any ideas on this one????

This has me VERY worried that something isnt right with the motor now.

It has 40+ psi oil pressure... normal for startup.

Did you install new timing chain at this time? Is it double roller set up? Did you leave out spacers for oil pump?Maybe chain/lower sprocket rubbing oil pump? Your idle speed will have to reset from cam advancing, this may also add to sound level.

I put the spacers in.

Looks to me like the cam sprocket didnt go on all the way.

Apparantly the dowel pin got pushed in as well... damn sprocket went on fine originally... now Im having all kinds of hell with it. Now Im either A. going to have to pull the valve covers and loosen all the rockers to get **** set right... or b... manhandle it... and I dont like that option.

Yeah... crap happens.

Im seeing what I can do in the way of heads right now... Id hate to pull them to swap some valves... but thats what I might have to do.

So you dont hear any clicking noise its just louder? Thats weird

I just installed my GTP S2's and I hear a very loud clicking noise under the driver side valve cover, then I took it off and nothinf loose so I dont get it?

Have you also checked your preload? Thats what I was told to check or could also be a lifter? Damn cars

Well... we were going to advance it 4*, but if felt like it was tapping, so I backed it down to two... but the damage was done. I guess I was turning the crank harder than I thought.

I just finished my H/C swap. Just topping off the coolant now. I installed the rollmaster dot-to-dot. It should be fine.

So not enough P/V clearance was the culprit? When you advanced the cam 4 degrees you lost some clearance and that bent your valve?

With that much duration and opening the valve that early- you will smack the piston.

Just for informations sake- how much has been taken off of your heads, what intake valve size and what thickness gasket are you using?

Stock heads.

I have enough clearance at 2*... but 4* taps the piston... and bends valves. Sounds like the spark plug isnt in... but coming out the intake manifold.

I'm very suprised that +4 wouldnt clear, but I suppose its possible. The G5X-2 has the same intake lobe and you can get it with a 112+4, but you should always check with cams that big. So did you check the clearances?

Nope. I wasnt going to pull the heads off to clay it. I turned it over by hand and I guess the piston hit the valve a bit too hard and bent it.

Could you have a header leak at gasket? you might be surprised how much like a valvetrain tap that would sound. Look close for soot around header tubes.

wow bent a valve by cranking it by hand? i would hope these valves are stronger than that....
