Default Flattened Lifter

So my LS1 acquired a nasty valvetrain noise on Tuesday as I was traveling down the highway. I decided to take the engine apart and see what could possibly be making such a ruckus inside of there. Well this is the only thing I could find that looked out of the ordinary, does it look ok, or can I run it the way it is?

Sorry for the crappy pics, got lazy and just took them with the cell and put them on comp quick.

I think that could be a problem. It was a pretty hairy situation getting it out. It wouldn't come out the top being the bottom of the lifter was mushroomed out, so I had to take it out the bottom. I put a piece of thin cardboard in the cam opening and let it fall on that then used a magnet to get it. Luckily it was the #1 intake (closest to the front) so it was the easiest you could get, but still was a very nerve racking situation! I dropped a lifter in the pan before, but that was when the motor was coming out, so no biggie. Not quite the way it was going this time, soo at least it came out ok.

The cam is damaged, but maybe it can be salvageable, if not I'll just add it to the other various carnage parts I have laying around or maybe make a cool lamp out of it all.

Any ideas as to what would cause this?

Lack of oil? How did the rest of the lifters and cam lobes look?

Everything else looked fine. It does seem to have oil consumption issues, it was a quart low at most after about 1000 miles, about a week before this happened. Think that could have done any harm? It seemed to have good oil pressure while cruising and such, around 50 psi.

Did you find the piece of roller that broke off?

Sad part is, GM says that should be normal consumption for the LS1 series of engines and the GTO's with the LS2 may consume up to 2 quarts (more prevelant in the M6 cars)

That's what happened to my F13 cam. Check the rest of the lifters, replace the cam, check the oil pump for debris, change the oil and you should be OK.

Improper hardening of the cam
Poor valve train control (valve float)
Oiling issue such as dirt in that lifter

Think it could have floated and then rotated in the lifter tray and got stuck sideways? I will have to check the tray and see what that looks like.

Sure enough, just drove over to the shop and checked my lifter trays. One of the trays the lifter slot was stretched out and I could spin the lifter freely in it. So that must have been what happened. Down shifted into 3rd to pass the car, ran it upto 6500+ and it valve floated, spun the lifter in the tray and stuck sideways and started grinding it down.

That happens quite often with those particular lifters. I had one of my lifters in my old Z28 do that. It was a little noisy too.

If you still have the tray, check the number on the bottom. Some of the trays with a "10" on the bottom had a prblem in that they positioned the lifter at a small angle to the cam. There are several guys who have had this happen due to the "10" lifter tray.
